I have owned Redskins Season tickets for one year and I just received the second set of season tickets in the mail today. I have been a Skins fan my entire life. I was 20 years old in college when I put my name on the Redskins Season ticket waiting list. Now I have the pleasure of opening that envelop and seeing sheets of Washington Redskins tickets...right now the preseason tickets look great!
It is an amazing feeling to open that envelop, addressed from FedEx Way, and unveil the physical representation of every skins fans expectations for this season. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use terms like "nut in my pants" but I just can't describe the feeling that has created the permanent smile on my face.
Sure I was excited when I found out I was going to get the tickets and it was great when I actually cut the check and thought, "damn I own seats for every redskins game". BUT there is nothing like the feeling of pulling out an entire season of redskins tickets all on one sheet.
Today, I didn't think Big AL was a fat pathetic loser with an amazing ability to move other humans. I didn't think that one of my favorite guys on and off the field actually took HGH. I didn't even think about how unproven our other receivers are. I typically fret about the fact that Gano is not the team that bounced us from the world cup, but our kicker that has more letters in his last name than made field goal attempts!
Basically none of those personnel issues matter, I received hope, excitement, history, and pride today all in a FedEx envelope. Go Skins!
Daniel Snyder...I will begin this argument by stating my history as a redskins fan and then tell you all why we may have the best owner in the league. I was born in the 70s, so I had the fortune of growing up during Gibbs first era. I was up past my bed time when I saw LT break Joe's leg on live TV. Most Skins fans that would be reading this saw that event either in person or on live TV.
I had the fortune to go RFK for several skins games, I thought that was just the way live football was! I had no Idea how special the atmosphere at RFK was. I really believe Jack Kent Cooke had a full-hearted passion to provide a great team...not just an entertaining team that had an easy sell for season tickets, a great team that sought to win a championship every season.
I believe JKC wanted to build the biggest best football venue the NFL had ever seen when he began planning to build a new Redskins stadium. He was trying to go above and beyond, the complains about RFK where not about the experience or the stadium itself, I think there are very few fans that saw those stands rocking that didn't appreciate the decades of character leaking out of that place.
The new skins stadium in RalJon Maryland was just a mistake. Every intention was to make the biggest and best, JKC was trying to accommodate the immense season ticket wait list, not for the money but for a bigger better louder RFK. It just didn't work out. I went to the final game at RFK and to the inaugural game at the Jacke Kent Cooke Stadium in RalJon Maryland ( now Fedex Field in Landover Maryland). It was like night and day.
Unfortunatley Jacke Kent Cooke was not there at the opening of his new stadium, and the team was in the control of his son. John Cooke was not Jacke Cooke very similar names but different abilities to run Professional sports franchises. After several bland years where the redskins made no headlines on the field or off John Cooke sold the team to Dan Snyder's group and finally we are back to a full-hearted passionate owner that will do anything in his power to provide a winner.
While Mr Snyder's passion hasn't panned out yet his tenure as an owner is relatively young. In that time it has become very obvious that he wants to win more than anything else. He is willing to foot any bill in the name of winning. It just isn't something he knows how to do in the NFL...Yet. He has tried to control, he has laid off, he has called upon past legends, and now he has handed the reigns over Bruce Allen, a businessman in the football world and Mike Shanahan, a no nonsense Superbowl winning coach. This most recent move also may not turn into Superbowl rings, but you can't fault the owner for doing everything in his power to put the proper framework together to build a championship football team.
I think Dan gets a really bad reputation because a lot of the long term, last generation owners are scared by a guy who is willing to go out their and try everything until he gets a winner. It is only a matter of time until Dan Snyder has a beautiful trophy in his office. His passion and determination make me really glad I was born as a skin fan. I am confident that his will to provide a winner is going to trickle down positively for decades to come.
I've been looking at the ball distribution in the Kyle Shanahan Offense. Last year in the passing game the Texans completed 101 passes to running backs, 225 passes to receivers, and 73 balls to tight ends. roughly 400 total passes...that is 60 more completions than the Redskins last year.
51 of those additional passes were completed to wide receivers. The Texans also passed to their backs more often than the skins. TE is the only position the Skins completed more balls to last season. This really should be no surprise as the redskins have one of the premier pass catching Tight Ends in the league, Chris Cooley. The surprise is that Fred Davis was actually as productive if not more productive than Cooley, after Fred filled in for the injured Cooley. Last year Davis pulled in 50 balls and if both guys stay healthy and share time they could each pull in 50-60 balls.
Running backs should see more balls coming their way too, it is also important to note that Kyle used his fullback in the passing game, so I expect to see Big Mike running free in secondaries aiming at the closest DB to run over..I like that. Less we get Westbrook to sign up I see us reducing the number of balls to the backs, I see our RB's strengths in running the ball more than catching it. Sellers will get 20-30, Portis will grab 30-40, Johnson and Parker each grab 15 and we end up completing 80-90 balls to our Backs.
That leave somewhere between 190 - 220 balls for our receivers. With McNabb's past experience at elevating young receivers game I believe Thomas and Kelly will be the beneficiaries of a lot of those balls. If our receivers get 200 completions, and Moss gets his standard 70 balls that leaves 130 completions among Thomas, Kelly, and the slew of veterans we have signed. I see Thomas and Kelly getting somewhere around 50 balls a piece and the remainder of the receptions scattered among the remaining veterans we picked up this year.
Last year Kelly and Thomas each pulled in 25 balls, if they each grabbed 50 balls and doubled their production I think you may see a shift for Santana that would move him to a more natural position in the slot. Santana is a short receiver at 5-10, but his combination of speed and quickness makes him a very dangerous player. If he becomes the slot receiver he will be motioned and moved around more which will let him get free of the line even quicker. It would also match him up with the nickle cornerback, unless opposing teams are willing to put their nickel corner outside on Thomas or Kelly against an accurate deep thrower like McNabb that seems crazy. If Kelly and Thomas can become productive, I think you'll see Santana shredding defenses out of the slot. Go skins.
