Blackouts, Censorship and Big Bellied Men
January 21st 2012 03:29
Way back in the 1950s the Big Bellied Men of Hollywood felt that Television would destroy their financial base.
They weren't pioneers in the field, they were repeating the arguments made by those who made money from concerts protested against the advent of records and then radio.
It wasn't the artistes or writers who created the music nor the actor or director who protested this 'infringement', it was the capitalist pig.
It was the guy who couldn't play Chopsticks on the piano who was screaming about concert halls closing, the guy who ran a movie studio and couldn't read a script who saw television as the great evil.
'Pay TV', (as Cable was once called) was blocked for years by those who owned television stations, not those who would be asked to pay.
In 1812 if you wanted to hear music or see a play you had to get up and buy a ticket. Getting up and buying a ticket also meant buying clothing to wear and making an event of attendance.
In 2012 'live' performances are still selling tickets, people want to go out and see concerts of their favourites, or a new movie.
Where the idea of 'piracy' came from in regards to music and other entertainment is not from the singer who gets a 1c for every album sold, or who was paid X dollars flat for a role in a movie. The shout is from the Big Bellied Men. For people who might have to work for a living and stop living off of other people's talent.
If falling record sales means that the singer has to have more performances, that's great. If falling box office means that better movies have to be made, that's great as well.
Of course, the big bellied men don't see it that way.
Attacking Piracy on the Internet will mean that more sites will move out of the spheres which have copyright.
Attempting to Block the sites in nations where the 'law' is in effect will increase the use of Proxy Servers.
So from 1 am to 2 am one connects to a server in Romania and via that server goes to a site in Siberia and downloads Avatar.. As far as the America provider is aware the customer went to an IP in Romania.
The attempt to pass an Act in America was well funded by the Big Bellied Men through their lobbyists. They must have assumed that the world would accept their decision as what was and was not permissible.
The response of Wikipedia and other sites and the public outcry has caused overwhelming non-support by the American Congress. Hence the Bill is being shelved for the time being.
It is too early for congratulations.
For Big Bellied Men rarely give up.
