As her blood begins to boil
Unseen hands feed the flames
Of undying hatred and fear
In the maddening quiet
While he slumbers gently
Next to the dying embers
Encased on three sides
By smoke-stained bricks
Pieces lay scattered on the floor
Only one has survived
This uncompassionate beating
As the rolling thunder growls
Tomorrow the deed forgiven
But always will remain the survivor

He greeted her the next morning
Tail wagging and eyes apologetic
