Bird Song

it is dawn and I am laying on the highway being run over by trucks
well, the sounds of trucks any way
it is still spring so the sound of the trucks has yet to be drowned out by the sounds of air conditioners
and still the late birds sing
somehow hearing one another through the din
and that’s when you know it
why nature bothered with so many different bird songs
why there are so many changes in pitch and tone
why some songs are piercingly shrill
some fully of raspy cacophony
nature did not anticipate after a million years of evolution that
there would be traffic and air conditioner noise
but there would be something
how to be heard above the din by doing something other than shouting…
although, there are the loud birds that throw everything into a cocked hat
shout to their mates and rivals I’m here
and what are you going to do about it!
The wind chimes have fallen silent
no tinkling today
but the full throated roar of monster trucks continues unabated
the song of the highway
