Elizabeth Bathory was a countess. She was nice and rich, and even lived in a castle. She was a member of the Bathory family, who came from Hungary. They were of noble rank. Elizabeth was one of the first members to become a killer!
Elizabeth had a real name. It was Erzsebeth. A strange name which no doubt had foreignness stamped all over it. She lived in Ecsed Castle. Her father was named Georfy. Her mother was Anna. They were both from the Bathory clan - however her father was from the Ecsed branch, and her mother from the Somlyo branch, hence they were like cousins! Her mother had the branch that granted Elizabeth the olive to nobility.
Elizabeth grew up fast. She learned Latin, German, and Greek, and then she was given to Ferenc Nadasdy. She was given over for marriage as an aristocratic pact. The two married on May 8, 1575. She was only 14.5 years old! This was considered fine at the time, but it would be illegal in the modern world!
Elizabeth spent most of her time alone as her husband traveled to Vienna. She lived in Csejte Castle which had been brought by her mother in 1569. A fine plot of land surrounded the castle.
In 1578 her husband became the commander of Hungarian troops. He let them to war against the Ottomans. While he was away at war Elizabeth took care of the house and managed the funds. She gave care to the peasants, and tried to keep them happy.
In 1585 Elizabeth had her first child, Anna. She then had more until a whole litter was made. Her husband died in 1604 at the ripe age of 47. The reason was illness - pneumonia perhaps. She was thrown into turmoil.
In 1602 - 1604 Elizabeth had nasty rumors said about her because she defended women's rights. However they turned into other rumors, that had to do with young girls. The girls were said to have been lured by the offer for work, and then they were killed. It was said they were beaten, burnt, had their hands cut, had their flesh bitten, were starved, and were put under sexual abuse. There were 300 reports for over 640 deaths.
Elizabeth paid for her crimes. She had her crown taken away. She was put under house arrest. There were four servants arrested with her. They were taken to trial on January 07, 1611. Bathory didn't show up. Out of the four servants three were found guilty. The three who were found guilty had their fingers taken off with hot pokers, and one of them was beheaded before being burned. The other one was sentenced to life in prison for being an accomplice. Bathory was put in a tower. She lived on for four years. Then on August 21, 1614 she was found dead. She had eaten no food, and so it is unknown what she died of. Perhaps her spirit gave way?
Elizabeth was buried. The villagers threatened to dig up her body and burn it again. However it was moved to Ecsed - her home when she was born. There she rested.
