Big Fat Loads
April 20th 2008 09:14
My boss is a great one for secrecy. He never tells me where Im going when he wants me to swap out. And I dont usually get to know what Im hauling until its getting loaded. Yesterday was a classic.
I picked up my load in Calif. and headed out for "somewhere in Wyoming" to swap trailers. My load was pretty heavy so I had to go lite on the fuel to keep the weight down for the scales. I get a message from the boss to stop in Rawlins and wait for the swap. It's been a long day and Im getting tired by this time, so I try to get some sleep. No such luck, the other truck pulls in about half an hour later and that ends the nap.
When we get the swap done, the other driver tells me its a little heavy. My tanks were really low so I went to the scale before adding fuel, so Id know how much I could put in. 79,650 lbs. ! At 8 lbs. per gallon of diesel, that aint a full tank! Not even close. My drivers are heavy to start with so I get to go from fuel stop to fuel stop all the way to Santa Clara, Calif. trying to keep it legal and avoid as many scales as possible.
Boy, do I love my job. I love my job. I love my job. Uh huh.......................... ..................
