Big College Basketball Games on Jan. 14th
January 13th 2012 23:55
12th-ranked UNLV at 22nd-ranked San Diego State: The lone game featuring two top 25 teams on Saturday. Both teams are fighting for Mountain West supremacy here. UNLV(16-2) are cruising along in the conference so far, without getting any real competition. San Diego State(14-2) is the competition. The Aztecs are led by Jamaal Franklin who is second on the team in scoring averaging 15 points and leading the team in rebounding with seven per game. UNLV scores points, lots of them. The team averages 81 points per game, tenth in the country. Look for an upset here, though as the Aztecs get the better of UNLV.
2nd-ranked Kentucky at Tennessee: Tennessee(8-8) got a signature win last week over Florida, now get to host Kentucky. The Volunteers have had a tough schedule so far this year, playing ranked teams in Duke, Pittsburgh, Memphis and Mississippi State. Trae Golden leads the team in scoring with 15 points per game. Kentucky(16-1) are looking nearly unbeatable. The Wildcats can beat you in a number of ways, either going inside or outside with great shooting. Kentucky should pull this one out, though it will go down to the wire.
3rd-ranked North Carolina at Florida State: Florida State(10-6) are looking for a big win after failed opportunities so far this year against Connecticut, Florida, Harvard and Michigan State. Don't look for it to happen here. North Carolina(15-2) has too much firepower for the listless Seminoles offense to keep up with. North Carolina with Harrison Barnes in charge will roll.
Oregon at Arizona: The Pac-12 game of the week features two teams looking to make the next step and take control of third place in the division. Oregon(12-5) is making great strides this year under second-year head coach Dana Altman. Arizona(12-5) is still trying to figure out to win without Derrick Williams leading the way. Williams of course is now playing for Minnesota in the NBA. This game will be close to the end, but look for the Wildcats to prevail.
Sunday the 15th- game:
8th-ranked Indiana at 5th-ranked Ohio State: The game of the weekend? Not really as Indiana is showing some troubling signs. Indiana did beat Ohio State earlier on this season as well. The Hoosiers struggled to contain Minnesota shooters in a loss on Thursday at home. Now Ohio State(15-2) enters the game with all kinds of guys who can shoot. Jared Sullinger will lead the way for the Buckeyes in this game.
