Svensk Hyllingsfest

October 9th 2011 23:25

Yesterday(Saturday, October 8th) I took a trip back to my hometown of Lindsborg to attend Svensk Hyllingsfest(Swedish Honoring Fest) which occurs every two years on the second Friday and Saturday in October.

The whole community comes together to celebrate the Swedish herritage of the town, from the grade school children to the adults, who wear Swedish style folk clothing and perform Swedish folk dances. There is also a Hyllingsfest King and Queen, both who are chosen for their contributions to the community. The parade was yesterday so I brought my son along. All was going well until it started to rain, which it continued to do off and on until we left. But we still had a great time, as we hung out with my dad, grandma and uncle to watch it.

I participated when I was a kid, and I regret to this day of not being a part of the highschool Swedish Folk Dancers, because they travelled to Sweden my freshman year. I wish everyday that I still lived in Lindsborg so that my son could participate.

My Garden Experience

September 25th 2011 01:33
I started a garden this past spring, my first at my home. It was a small garden, something that would easy for me to tend to. At first, things were going well.

But then, the schorching heat came. Here in the central plains, the record was broken for consecutive days over 100 degrees. My Cherokee Purple tomato plant only produced a few fruits. My potatoes turned out ok, as did my Apache chili peppers and radishes, which are an early vegetable. Some other plants suffered. I grew up gardening with my dad, who instilled in me a love of working the soil and growing various things in the garden, behind my childhood home, in the small town of Lindsborg.

I am hoping for a better summer, next year.

Hi !

May 18th 2011 23:45
This is my first ever blog post, so please bear with me. Whenever I go back home to visit, I wish that I could stay and not come back here. I get homesick which causes me great pain.
This spring, I started a garden in back yard. It brings back a whole lot of great memories of childhood and now I am passing that along that to my own son.
