Begin Traveling, in your Present Location
September 26th 2006 02:08
Where are you now?
How long have you been there?
What has kept you there for that amount of time?
Do you keep up with interesting info on your current environment?
Are you at 'home,' and what does that mean to you anyway?
The best kind of travel is an attitude that you take with you, and so beginning to travel before you actually begin your geographical journey is highly recommended. To do this imagine you have already begun your journey, starting with what appears to be the most mundane thing, and make it something exquisitely extraordinary.
For instance, I pass Bondi Junction almost every day and become conditioned to its presence on a regular basis, needing to remind myself again and again that it is a special place with its unique Sydney culture and style. I try to look at new shops, dine in different places, and keep my perspective fresh at other times so I won't be nearly as 'bored' when I return. This mental activity keeps me entertained in itself.
It's often the little things about the day-to-day existence of another culture that intrigue the most. By appreciating the little things 'at home' you can open yourself up to increased sense of not just where you are but who you may be.
