BCS Title Game Preview
January 8th 2012 17:37
The final game of the bowl season is set for Monday night around 5:30 pacific time. LSU will take on Alabama, in a rematch of a 9-6 game which the Tigers won that took place on Nov. 5th. This is a game hardly anybody wanted to see again after the battle of field goals, yet here we are.
LSU(13-0) will start Jordan Jefferson in this game. He played parts of the Tigers win over the Tide earlier this year. LSU's other quarterback Jarrett Lee started that game. Alabama(11-1) quarterback AJ McCarron has grown as the starter over this season. He has 16 touchdown passes and five interceptions on the year.
Both teams have the same ingredients to gain a win. Running the football, and an elite defense. Alabama has the nation's top defense, and LSU is right behind at number two. Alabama running back Trent Richardson has rushed for 1,583 yards on the year, and 20 touchdowns. LSU has two solid running backs in Michael Ford and Spencer Ware. Ford has rushed for 755 yards, and Ware hit the 700 yard mark.
Neither team is much of a threat to throw the ball that much. LSU averages 167 passing yards, and Alabama comes in at 221. Yet both teams score points and lots of them, as LSU averages 38.5 and Alabama scores 36. But all that scoring will be thrown out due to the strength of the teams defenses.
LSU features two All-American cornerbacks in Morris Claiborne and Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Matheiu. Matheiu has forced six fumbles, and has two interceptions on the season. He is also a threat returning punts. Claiborne is a threat returning interceptions he makes, as he leads the nation in this statistic at 173 yards. Alabama features a handful of All-Americans on the defensive side. Courtney Upshaw and De'Onta Hightower lead the way. Upshaw has 8.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss, while Hightower leads the team in tackles with 81.
Neither team is going to score much, a touchdown will be a welcome sight. This game comes down to if Richardson can get over 100 yards on the ground for the Tide. If he can then Alabama wins, if not LSU takes it. Am thinking, LSU wins by three points or less.
