Bathroom Door
At first I thought it was the sun
peering over the shoulder
of the stout and sandstone structure
seven stories of desert tan
sandy blocks born from the sand
But this light is hot, too quick for morning
and with the crack!
a balloon of fire
a bulbous dome of sound
while inside my chest
my heart thumps a rhythm
to match the beat
of my pounding, hurried feet…
There is some secret rudely veiled
In the massive tumbling stones
In the mud and bloody bones
In this building brought so low.
What reckless magic’s working here?
The blast that shook and bled my ear
The blast that birthed this silent air
Thick with stink of burning hair
As the light and dust collide
Something’s fading into view
among the dead a battered door
that reads MEN and nothing more.
