Very Early NBL Prediction

April 21st 2008 07:22
The Adelaide 36ers have recently singned big man Luke Schenscher... They are also very close to resigning former NBA player Julius Hodge to another season, subject of him gaining an NBA contract. Hodge put the sixers on the brink of making the playoffs last year, earning a spot in the All NBL 3rd team after only playing less than half of the season!

If hodge returns to the NBA, word is they are looking at Baylor star Aaron Bruce to play what would be one of the best backcourts in the NBL with Brett Maher. Traditionally a 1 guard, Bruce found himself playing alot at 2 this season and with quite good success, he is a good shooter and quick on the fast break.

The odds arent out yet for the next season, but when they are, Get on Adelaide!

As I am writing this, the playoffs are a day old... Sorry guys!

1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. 8 Denver Nuggets

Season series: Lakers 3-0

* -- if necessary

I am a massive fan of the Lake Show so ill try not to be too bias... Lakers 4-0...

Seriously, the Lakers should outmuscle Melo, AI and the boys without too much difficulty. I am a big fan of this Denver side but it just never seems like it will ever live up to its potential. Carmello Anthony is not a good leader and his recent trouble with the law adds to his long list of reasons why George Karl should pull him by the ear to a quiet corner of the pepsi center and give him a gob full before relinquishing his leadership rights. The free flowing offence of the Lakers at the moment should easily expose the Nuggets lack of defence that they have showed this year. It seems like they are just standing around and hoping that Marcus Camby will do all the work. A-I is more interested in going for steals rather than marking his man. The Lakers have been one of the best rebounding teams since the Gasol trade in February. Gasol and Odom are averaging over 20 rebounds combined since the trade. This will do well against the Nuggets, a team that puts up more shots than any other team in the league.
Lakers in 4 or 5.

4 Utah Jazz vs. 5 Houston Rockets

Season series: Jazz 2-1

Nov. 1: Rockets 106, Jazz 95
Jan. 27: Jazz 97, Rockets 89
April 14: Jazz 105, Rockets 96

Schedule:

Game 1: Jazz 93, Rockets 82
Game 2: at Rockets, April 21, 9:30 p.m. (TNT)
Game 3: at Jazz, April 24, 10:30 p.m. (TNT)
Game 4: at Jazz, April 26, 10:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Game 5*: at Rockets, April 29, TBD (TBD)
Game 6*: at Jazz, May 2, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Rockets, May 4, TBD (TBD)
* -- if necessary

The Utah Jazz surprised most by making it to the Western Conference Finals last year. This year I am picking them to do one better. With no Yao Ming, Dikembie Mutombo has been a sufficient backup. However, the seemingly ageless Mutombo has been looking tired and worn down over the last few weeks, I expect the ragun-cajun turk Mehmet Okur to have his number in this matchup. Houston's rock this year has been Rafer Alston. He has run the team better than anyone since Kenny Smith/Sam Cassell in the mid 90's, however, with Alston out the Rockets will have to rely too heavily on Bobby Jackson who definitely isnt a player who can perform whilst playing alot of minutes... Expect Deron Williams to explode this series. T-Mac hasnt ever won a playoff series, dont expect this to be the one, the Jazz are just too classy an outfit at the moment who up to this point of the season have done everthing right... with the Williams/Carlos Boozer show leading the way, this side is unstoppable.

Could be abit of a contravertial call but I expect the Jazz to sweep the Rockets.

3 San Antonio Spurs vs. 6 Phoenix Suns

Season series: Suns 3-1

Dec. 13: Suns 100, Spurs 95
Jan. 31: Spurs 84, Suns 81
March 9: Suns 94, Spurs 87
April 9: Suns 96, Spurs 79

Schedule:

Game 1: Spurs 117, Suns 115 (2OT)
Game 2: at Spurs, April 22, 9:30 p.m. (TNT)
Game 3: at Suns, April 25, 10:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Game 4: at Suns, April 27, 3:30 p.m. (ABC)
Game 5*: at Spurs, April 29, TBD (TBD)
Game 6*: at Suns, May 1, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Spurs, May 3, TBD (TNT)
* -- if necessary

Before previewing this series, let me get this off my chest... Steve Kerr is one of the worst General Managers in the NBA. 2 years ago, the Suns had an exciting, young, starting 5 with potential to win a championship by 2008 by playing run and gun, fast break basketball. Well, its now 2008 and the suns have an ageing starting 5 thats tempo has slowed down with the inclusions of Shaquille O'Neal and Grant Hill, meaning that fast break basketball isnt as effective with these boys on the court.

The San Antonio Spurs are the defending champions. And the have returned to the playoffs again this year with little to no hype, just the way they like it. This series is going to be a close one that really could go either way, however, I expect the Spurs to take it out in 7 games. If i was a betting man, I wouldn't touch this series with a 10 foot pole for winners. Play the lines as it will be a close series.

2 New Orleans Hornets vs. 7 Dallas Mavericks

Season series: Hornets 2-1

Dec. 1: Hornets 112, Mavs 108
Dec. 14: Mavs 89, Hornets 80
Feb. 20: Hornets 104, Mavs 93

Schedule:

Game 1: Hornets 104, Mavs 92
Game 2: at Hornets, April 22, 7 p.m. (TNT)
Game 3: at Mavericks, April 25, 8 p.m. (ESPN)
Game 4: at Mavericks, April 27, 9:30 p.m. (TNT)
Game 5*: at Hornets, April 29, TBD (TBD)
Game 6*: at Mavericks, May 1, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Hornets, May 3, TBD (TNT)
* -- if necessary

This is my upset series. The Dallas Mavericks last game of the regular season said one thing to me "Were ready" Dallas easily disposed of the hornets by 13 points with Jason Kidd recording his 100th triple double and outclassing Chris Paul, the man taking his (and steve nash's) mantle as the NBA's elite point guard. The team had geld well for the first time since the Kidd trade. I think that New Orleans will be a team of the future, but the playoff experience of Dallas will put them over the line in 7 games. Dirk and the crew to return to the confrence semi finals for the first time in 2 years.

Well there you go...

NBA Playoffs 1st Round Preview

April 18th 2008 05:03
The playoffs are amongst us! after almost 5 months of jostling for positions around the league, the business end of the season has finally arrived. 14 teams have been given an early vacation whilst for the other 16, the fun has just begun.

Before I get into the 1st round matchups, Ill give my prediction for the winner this year.

Boston Celtics ($2.75 SportsTAB)

Lets be honest, lets not fool ourselves, there is only one team that can win this year. The Boston Celtics. Throughout the whole season everyone has been trying to find a reason for them not to win, but all arguments have come up short. They could very well make it to the NBA finals this year with an unprecedented 12-0 playoff record. However this is probably unlikely. It will be more like a 12-2/12-3 record as they will drop a few games against either the Pistons/Cavs/Magic. They will enter the NBA finals with fresh legs whilst all the Western powerhouses will be in tiring each other out from the 1st round. It wouldnt be surprising if the team that comes out of the west plays a maximum 21 games before they get to the finals. put that on top of the 82 game season, and that is a lot of basketball to expect from some of these teams.

With the likes of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen running the show, with this seasons surprise Rajon Rondo and the always reliable Sam Cassell taking charge from the point, the Celtics have a chemistry and the experience that all other 29 teams in the league want but are far from having. (with the exception of the San Antonio Spurs)

So thats that, Boston will win the title this year.

1st Round Match-Ups - Eastern Conference

1 Boston Celtics (66-16) vs. 8 Atlanta Hawks (37-45)

Season series: Celtics 3-0
Nov. 9: Celtics 106, Hawks 83
March 2: Celtics 98, Hawks 88
April 12: Celtics 99, Hawks 89

Schedule:

Game 1: at Celtics, April 20, 8:30 p.m. (TNT)
Game 2: at Celtics, April 23, 8 p.m. (TNT)
Game 3: at Hawks, April 26, 8 p.m. (ESPN)
Game 4: at Hawks, April 28, 8 p.m. (TNT)
Game 5*: at Celtics, April 30, TBD (TBD)
Game 6*: at Hawks, May 2, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Celtics, May 4, TBD (TBD)
* -- if necessary

The Celtics should sweep the babys of the playoffs this year, the Atlanta Hawks, who havent seen post season action since 1999. Pull the broom out of the closet, Boston will sweep this series 4-0. Have your money on them every game.

4 Cleveland Cavaliers (45-37) vs. 5 Washington Wizards (43-39)

Season series: Tied 2-2
Dec. 5: Wizards 105, Cavs 86
Jan. 23: Cavs 121, Wizards 85
Feb. 22: Cavs 90, Wizards 89
March 13: Wizards 101, Cavs 99

Schedule:

Game 1: at Cavaliers, April 19, 12:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Game 2: at Cavaliers, April 21, 7 p.m. (TNT)
Game 3: at Wizards, April 24, 8 p.m. (TNT)
Game 4: at Wizards, April 27, 1 p.m. (ABC)
Game 5*: at Cavaliers, April 30, TBD (TBD)
Game 6*: at Wizards, May 2, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Cavaliers, May 4, TBD (TBD)
* -- if necessary

The King is back for another assult at the crown. Once again LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers will have to go through the Wizards in the first round. And once again they will beat them. In the last 2 playoff seasons, the Cavs have beaten the wiz's 4-2 and then 4-0. This year will be no different. Although they have looked shaky since the trade for Ben Wallace and Wally Szczerbiak and have had their share of injuries, they have still managed to hold onto their top 4 position. Antwan Jaimeson for the Wizards is having a career season and Gilbert Arenas has been back for afew weeks, however, the key to this team is Caron Butler. With Butler's knee injury meaning he isnt going to be 100% for this series throws the series in the Cavs favor.

It will be a close series with a lot of close games. Cavs to win in 6 or 7 purely off the back of some LeBron playoff magic that we are so used to this time of the year. Betting under the line could be an option for most games in this series.

3 Orlando Magic (52-30) vs. 6 Toronto Raptors (41-41)

Season series: Magic 2-1
Nov. 7: Magic 105, Raptors 96
Feb. 20: Raptors 127, Magic 110
March 4: Magic 102, Raptors 87

Schedule:

Game 1: at Magic, April 20, 12:30 p.m. (TNT)
Game 2: at Magic, April 22, 7:30 p.m. (NBA TV)
Game 3: at Raptors, April 24, 7:30 p.m. (NBA TV)
Game 4: at Raptors, April 26, 3 p.m. (TNT)
Game 5*: at Magic, April 28, 7:30 p.m. (NBA TV)
Game 6*: at Raptors, May 1, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Magic, May 3, TBD (TNT)
* -- if necessary

This could be one of the best series of the post season. "Superman" Dwight Howard and the least talked about superstar in the league Chris Bosh is a preview of what will be one of the leagues best rivalries in a few years time. The Magic wont loose this series but they will have to work for it. The Raptors are one of the sharpest shooting teams in the league and with the likes of Jamario Moon, Anthony Parker and Carlos Delfino all shooting well, and the best 3 point shooter in the league Jason Kapono sitting pretty on the bench, the erratic Magic will have to bring their a game to pick up away wins in this series.

Take the Magic to win in 6 or 7. They will win all their home games but will be a shaky side come the games in Toronto.

2 Detroit Pistons (59-23) vs. 7 Philadelphia 76ers (40-42)

Season series: Tied 2-2

Nov. 23: Pistons 83, Sixers 78
Jan. 23: Pistons 86, Sixers 78
March 12: Sixers 83, Pistons 82
April 9: Sixers 101, Pistons 94

Schedule:

Game 1: at Pistons, April 20, 6 p.m. (TNT)
Game 2: at Pistons, April 23, 7:30 p.m. (NBA TV)
Game 3: at 76ers, April 25, 7 p.m. (ESPN2)
Game 4: at 76ers, April 27, 7 p.m. (TNT)
Game 5*: at Pistons, April 29, TBD (TBD)
Game 6*: at 76ers, May 1, TBD (TBD)
Game 7*: at Pistons, May 3, TBD (TNT)
* -- if necessary

Detroit will win this series, no questions asked. the team just looks too good and knows how to play playoff basketball. Don't be surprised if the 76ers win one of their home games.

Detroit 4-1.

Coming tomorrow: Western Conference.
