Are You a Real Fan?

April 4th 2012 02:56
Baseball, for me, is an extremely easy topic for me to write about. I could write about sabermetrics, how to throw a curveball, or something along the lines of type of bat you should use. But today I am going to collect all my thoughts regarding this topic and write about why I believe baseball is the best sport in the world.
Baseball, known as America’s Game, is one of the most loved and watched sports in North America. It is unarguable that most people love a trip to the ballpark, whether they are two years old or ninety-two years old. Some may say Baseball is boring, I will admit it can be slow at times and hard to follow. But if you remember back to the last day of the regular season last year you would may disagree. Let me refresh your memory; last year on the last day of the season, the longshot Rays and the Cardinals were fighting for their lives. Both teams had put forth incredible streaks together to push for the Wild Card spot in their respective leagues. For the Rays to make the playoffs they needed to beat the Yankees and have the Redsox lose to make the playoffs. The Cardinals needed to win while the Braves needed to lose to the Phillies. It was not looking good for the Rays, but with a 9th inning rally they tied the game and forced extra innings. At almost the same time the Redsox blew a 9th inning lead and the game was tied. In dramatic fashion Evan Longoria hit a walk off homerun to give the Rays the win. This literally happened seconds after the Redsox had lost. The Redsox were out and the Rays were in. It is vey unlikely that this situation will ever happen again. The National League side was not as exciting but still great, the Cards did their part by winning and the Braves could not muster enough offense for a win against the Phillies. It is hard to believe that after 161 previous games, the team’s records could be so close. This is just one of the many things that makes baseball such a great sport.
Personally, my favourite part of baseball would be the statistics. Baseball is undoubtedly one of the most over analyzed sport in the world, but I love it. You can find statistics on anything. They even have newer, unpopular stats like WAR, and other Sabermetrics but that is a whole different story. With all these stats one can know anything about anyone, making you feel like a pro, which is quite nice. You do not have to be a professional statistician to understand these stats either. Statistics are not the only thing though; personal opinion is also crucial to following baseball.
If you do not like to pick favourites, maybe baseball isn’t for you. Baseball is fueled by rivalries, with all the divisional games in the 162 game seasons. You grow to hate the other teams in your division with a passion. As a Jays fan, I cannot stand the Yankees or the Redsox because I am sick and tired of them seeing their names above the Jays in the AL East standings. If you do not like to choose favourites you probably won’t like baseball. If you can root for a team all season long win or lose, the game will bore you. I root for the Jays because they are the only Canadian team left in the MLB.
As a Canadian it would be stereotypical of me for hockey to be my favourite sport. Although I love hockey, it isn’t nearly as interesting as baseball. I think the deciding factor for me is the length of the season. 162 games gives you a ballgame to watch almost every day, which makes it easier to follow along with the standings and rankings. You don’t get this with the shorter 82 games NHL schedule because teams don’t play as often and you often miss games because you are unsure of when the next game is.
Although baseball can be slow at times and you could even say boring, there is no doubt in my mind that baseball is the greatest sport on the face of the earth.

MLB Smackdown

April 2nd 2012 00:55
Today in the Rockies and Indians spring training matchup, former Rockie Ubaldo Jimenez plunked Troy Tulowitzki in the first pitch of his first at bat. Some people think this was intentional after the 'rocky' situation before and after Ubaldo's trade last year. The former Colorado ace was upset because of the contract offers to Tulo and Gonzales, and the lack of one to himself. The Rockies stars shot back that Jimenez didn't give 100% because he was more or less pissed off about the whole situation. In my opinion Jimenez threw at Tulo on purpose, especailly after calling Cleveland 'heaven' compared to Colorado. It's funny when big name pitchers 'unintentionally' hit batters it tends to be the best player, interesting. Keep your eye on the next time these 2 teams square up, I'm sure they're will be fireworks.

Let The Fun Begin!

Toronto Blue Jays
Being from Stratford,Ontario, naturally my favourite team is the Blue Jays seeing as they're the only team from Canada. But as everyone knows they have been known to suck and it was exemplified by the 20 blown saves last season.
2012
Bullpen
This season is looking more promising, thanks to AA adding more depth in the bullpen by signing Santos and Darren Oliver who hopefully should be effective but has definitely seen better days. Re-acquiring Jason Frasor could be a huge move if he shows he can be as effective as in previous years.
Lawrie
Brett Lawrie has been a hot topic recently, famously being compared to George Brett which I don't think is fair. Sure he hustles and loves the game, but you can't compare Mr.Lawrie to George Brett after half a season, and a full spring training. I'm sure George is turning over in his grave knowing about this comparison. (wait he's not dead?) I'm not saying the kid isn't good, but don't be quick to jump the gun to judge him.
Jose Canseco
I was watching Off The Record the other day with Michael Landsberg, and the special guest was Jose Canseco. Everything was going on well between the two and it was fairly interesting. But then Jose said he thinks he could make a return to the MLB and would play for free! This BLEW my mind! How the hell at 48 years old does he think he has the bat speed to keep up with Jamie Moyers fastball let alone anyone throwing hard! He also guaranteed at least 0 homers and 100 RBI's. But in all seriousness this guy also thought he could be victorious against a 7 foot giant in the MMA ring. Are we sure the only drug Jose was on was the 'roids?

If you agree with me on any of these topics, or just think I'm an ignorant douche bag, please leave a comment so I'm not crying myself to sleep every night wondering why no one reads my blog

Swept Away

Super Tim
Jays got swept away on Wednesday by the Braves. Ricky Romero pitched a great game on Monday only to give up a game winning homer by, wait for it, opposing pitcher Tim Hudson. Give Hudson credit he made himself look good 2 hits over 8 innings and winning it with the 2 RBI's but not sure if Ricky underhanded the pitch it could of been easier to hit. This guy hit 18 jacks in his senior year of college, he knows how to handle the bat.
The other 2 games weren't nearly as good as the Jays fell 5-1 both games. I think I saw a picture of the Jays offense on my milk carton as they have been missing for a while now. A couple of bright spots were Jose robbing a homerun,(which you don't see much because of the tall Roger's Center walls). Also he took the AL lead back in home runs and he surpassed the 4 million votes for the all-star, next milestone for him would be 4.6 million votes that my road to the show player got in MLB 09 The Show. The Jays hope to rebound against the Cardinals and see if their offense can stop shitting the bed

Poo Holes out 4 - 6 weeks

Pujols The Pu....

Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is out 4-6 weeks, a tough injury for the Cards and probably doesn't do much in the way of getting him a new contract with the team. A awkward injury on a sprain/jammed wrist but in my opinion it was a joke. You make millions of dollars a year don't roll around on the ground like you play for yankee's get up get the ball and stop the runners from advancing, show some balls like Curt Schilling with the bloody sock, you play first base its not like you have to do anything, maybe you should sign in the American League and be a DH
