Bands Named After Insects
October 8th 2007 04:11
Friends
I am embarrassed to say that I was watching a documentary about Roaches and as gross as they are, I just couldn't turn the channel:
I learned that
Roaches can live without food for a month, but will only survive a week without water.
Most species of roaches live in the tropics. But roaches live all over the world, including the North and South Poles. Pest cockroaches can withstand temperatures as cold as 32°F (0°C), but will die if the temperature goes much below that. In extremely cold places, however, they survive by moving in with humans.
Cockroaches can climb walls because they are equipped with a set of little claws on their feet designed for that very purpose.
Crushed cockroaches can be applied to a stinging wound to help relieve the pain.
Roaches use their feelers, or antennae, as noses. Their sense of smell is so great, they recognize family and friends by their distinctive odors.
Cockroaches are thought to have originated (during the Carboniferous era) 280 million years ago
Some female cockroaches mate once and are pregnant for the rest of their lives
If you want to impress your friends, here is a great link to any questions regarding roaches Link Or watch one of my favorite movies to get your fill of roach humor Joe's Apartment.
This got me to thinking... What other bands were named after insects?
The Crickets
Papa Roach
The Beatles
Adam and the Ants
Barking Spyders
Bees Make Honey
The Boll Weevils
Centipedes
Daddylong Legs
Flys or The Flys
Iron Butterfly
The Bees (The Band of Bees)

You all but named Aussie band the Cockroaches - probably better known to the world these days as half of the kids group The Wiggles.
Boy that question's going to bug for hours now.
Stay well.

Or do you carry one with you?
The Crickets, the Beatles, the Adam and the ants, and you know I have never ever thought of the literal meaning of the Beatles, whom I love ( well their music anyway and their mop tops and their Lliverpudlian accents or did they come from Manchester?

I saw an episode of Rove where he allowed himself to be covered in cockroaches. I spent the whole night twitching.
As to the bands - I never would have thought there were so many with insect names! Why do you think that is? What relationship do insects have with music that these bands would name themselves after them? Weren't the Wiggles once a band called the Cockroaches?

Oh yuck. If there is one thing I can't stand it is cockroaches.
Me too and they are very common in Texas.

Maybe for camp value? I have no other ideas...sorry friend
Maybe they were all just trying to think of a name and then they saw a spider/cricket/whatever?
That makes sense...
So glad to see you!

Fun Facts
As for the cockroaches - I saw them up close and personal at a concert years ago, and as others have pointed out, as they now make up the majority of the Wiggles, I see my kids dancing to them.
As if that's not weird enough, whenever I see the wiggles I can't help but think about that night at the cockroaches and one of the girls there that I knew who wanted one of us to contribute our bra to her so she could throw it at them.
