Bad calls part of baseball

Yeah, so the Pirates got it put to them last night. One ESPN writer opined that it was the worst call ever. I don't know - I know that a win is arguably more important than a no-hitter, but no-hitters are a hell of a lot more rare than your ordinary win. So maybe not the worst call ever. But was it bad? Oh yeah, it was bad. Can you blame the umpire? Look, it was nearly two in the morning. Six plus hours of baseball. Neither team was having any luck turning baserunners into runs. You can understand the ump missing that call. I can understand it.
Bad calls are part of every sport. Some, like home plate safe or out calls, are more important therefore more controversial than others. It's akin to hockey's "goalie interference" call, or football's pass interference. The call is completely subject to the interpretation, line of sight, sight, personality and feelings of the umpire or referee. But whining the next day how you got screwed out of a win is kind of silly. Calls go both ways. In a marathon season like baseball, I'm pretty sure that the good and bad calls will even out over the course of a year.
It was an entertaining, tiring, pleasant, amazing game to watch. It was marred a little by the bad call, but the Pirates and their fans should basically shut up. They had opportunities, with the heart of the order up in the 17th inning and a runner in scoring position with only one out...and they failed to get a run. They failed earlier as well. As did the Braves. So missed opportunities often come around to hurt in more ways than one, like last night.
In any event, there's another game tonight. So onward and upward! LET'S GO BUCS!
