Iron Man 2

May 24th 2010 04:23
I finally made it out to see Iron Man 2. I have to admit I was hesitant. Sequels can be scary. Sometimes they leave you hoping for a third. Sometimes they leave you wishing they'd stopped after the first. Iron Man 2 left me wanting more.

What does it take to be a super hero? A chance encounter with something that gives you super human abilities, at least one super attractive and impossibly sweet woman who can see into your soul, a glaring fatal flaw, and an endless supply of resources including money. Narcissist Tony Stark certainly fits the bill as head of Stark Industries with Pepper Potts by his side. Once he encounters the arc reactor he's destined to be a super hero. That's the first movie. The question then becomes, "What next?"

Iron Man 2 reveals a bit more of Tony Stark's softer side. He's facing his own mortality as the palladium in his chest poisons him slowly. Tony is forced to deal with his feelings about his company, his father, and Pepper. It would've been easy for the writers to turn him into a blubbering idiot. Fortunately we don't travel too far down "sensitivity road." Tony Stark maintains his edge which makes his character so likeable and yet in some ways despicable.

Iron Man 2 completely fullfills it's duty as a sequel to add to the first movie and continue the storyline. If you love Marvel comics you won't be disappointed. For a little bonus stay after the credits and see "what's next."

And as always, don't forget to watch for Stan Lee

Where did my Redbox go?

May 18th 2010 02:14
So Diva tells me our Redbox at the gas station is gone, replaced by a Blockbuster machine! I don't know what that's all about. Things were going well with us and the Redbox. We loved it.

Diva mustered the courage to visit the new "bluebox." I admire her. I'm not quite ready yet. She wasn't impressed though. I guess they are often sold out of movies. That's rather inconvenient. Redbox seemed to have an endless supply of whatever I wanted. If I don't get on board with the new box however, I am left wandering into the local grocery store to rent from their Redbox. Recently my hubby and I just went ahead and rented off of our PS3. Yep, it was more money but I didn't have to lug my babies in and out of the car just to pick up a movie.

One of these days I'll mosey over to the bluebox and check it out but it'll be awhile.

She's Out of My League

April 12th 2010 16:19
You know, Diva has the hook-up with new releases (I won't go into details). As such, she never has the need to go see anything with me. This left me with a dilemma recently. I got a coupon to see one of four movies for $5 a person. The only two I cared about were She's Out of My League and The Bounty Hunter. Diva suggested the former, liking both but the latter being not as humorous. "But I don't really wanna pay to see it again," she tells me. Super. I went into work like a cheetah hunting prey hoping to pounce on one of my co-workers and coerce them into going with me. It was easier than I thought and I ended up with two takers for a "girls movie night."

She's Out of My League was great for five bucks but I'm not sure I would pay more than that. Kirk is a TSA worker and complete nerd who finds a cell phone belonging to super hot Molly. He returns the phone and Molly takes a liking to him. That's pretty much it. You don't have to think too hard to watch this one.

There were some really funny moments, and I mean really funny. And of course, the supporting actors provided a good deal of the humor. At times I was reminded of There's Something About Mary or Talladega Nights. The jokes were often crued but overall not nearly as raunchy as some of the stuff out there. The three of us were in the theater with two women in their 50's, three tattooed guys with a pierced chick, and at some point two hispanic dudes came in. It was the 10pm show. Me and my girls were the only ones laughing. And we weren't just laughing, we were rolling in the aisles at times. Not a peep from the other folks. I think the humor might have escaped the older ladies or else they were offended. The tattooed group, well I won't speculate there. The hispanic guys left before it was over.
Maybe we were slap happy. It was 10pm after all and I had worked 13 hours. But it was pretty funny and held my attention.

Sounds like I enjoyed it so why wouldn't I pay more? I think I'm just tired of average story lines with the same routine and predictability. That's what She's Out of My League is, average. And that's fine if your just looking for something to do. So, unless you're bored, you may want to wait for this one to hit DVD.

I can see why Diva didn't want to spend the money. But with her "movie hook-up" she's now out of my league.

How to Train Your Dragon

April 11th 2010 16:23
I personally do not like to watch movies with animals where I think something terrible will happen to the animal. I don't know why or when this happened although I have a sneaking suspicious it has something to do with The Fox and the Hound. Naturally when I saw How to Train Your Dragon was abouth Vikings who killed dragons and a boy who befriends one I immediately scratched it off my list. I guess scratching something off your list doesn't make it disappear though. I drove my hubby and kids to the theater. The plan was for the guys to go see the movie while my daughter and I went shopping. Who would've guessed that my sweet little princess would rather see a movie about dragon wrangling than go to Bath and Body for a major sale! No problem, hubby can take the kids and I'll shop alone. If only it were that simple. Apparently men do not possess the same ability to take three kids to the movies that women do. "I do not want to see this movie," I protested. But my baby girl was sad that her dad and brothers were going to go without her. What was I supposed to do? I purchased five tickets and off we went to see a movie I was certain would bring a cloud of gloom over the rest of my day.

We saw the 2D version of How to Train Your Dragon. Honestly, I would recommend skipping the 3D versions of most movies. Lately it seems every movie is in 3D but there's little advantage to paying extra to see them that way. I can see where this particular film may have some interesting scenes in 3D but I'm not convinced we lost anything by watching the standard version

Redbox, will you marry me?

March 29th 2010 18:31
I am absolutely in love with Redbox. For those of you who don't know what this is, let me explain. It is a big red machine that houses tons of DVDs available for rent at just a dollar a day. Redbox kiosks can be found in a ton of places. Locally we have them in grocery stores and such. My wonderful friend, Diva, introduced me to the one by her house. It's located at a gas station but the best part is, it's outside! I can park right in front of the Redbox, get what I need, and leave. The only thing better would be if it were a drive-thru.

Sophisticated Redbox users, like me, have discovered the joy of the Redbox website. There you can browse available movies, find which Redboxes have them available, and reserve your copy. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the movie I want available at Diva's gas station, driven over there, and found the movie had been rented! By reserving online you're guaranteed not to run into that problem

My kids live a pretty priviledged life. Along with having every toy and video game they want, they get to go to new movies the minute they hit the big screen. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was no exception. Now I realize this movie came out in September but I've only recently learned to appreciate it.

When we saw it at the theater I have to say I was less than impressed. In fact, I nearly dozed off somewhere in the middle. Maybe I was having a bad day or perhaps I just wasn't in the zone for a kid movie. Whatever the case may be I left the theater with a serious case of apathy

Let's hope there's no District 10

March 17th 2010 20:48
I avoided seeing it in theaters but there's just something about that Redbox that gets me. Partly due to my husband's desire to see the movie and partly because my dearest friend had already enjoyed it, I rented District 9. As I swiped my credit card I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that I was making the wrong choice. After all, The Informant was available, or what about Ponyo? But I remembered my friend telling me District 9 wasn't half bad and she kind of liked it. She would never steer me wrong. I grabbed the disc and drove home, excited to see what this latest alien flick would deliver.

I was thrilled to see Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) as the producer. Little did I realize that would be the high point of the evening. I don't know how I could've ignored my gut feeling and multiple other film reviews to end up with this disgusting and depressing movie in my DVD player
