Autumn Grace: Part 3
February 13th 2007 00:50
Autumn-Grace had snuck into the house much later that night and went straight to her bedroom. She needed to be alone to think about what had happened between her and Tyler.
Lana heard her daughter come in and looked at the clock. It was after 2:00a.m. Lana knew that Autumn-Grace had been at Tyler’s. She had never come in so late before and in her mother’s heart, Lana knew what had happened between the young couple. She sat up on the edge of the bed with mixed emotions. Lana wanted to go to her daughter and talk to her. Instead, she lay back down and fought the urge.
Over the next few weeks, Autumn-Grace and Tyler were inseparable. They were so happy together and expressed it in ways they had been cautious about before. Holding hands and kissing were things that Autumn-Grace had been self-conscious about before because it had been new to her. She looked at things differently now. Tyler was her lover and the innocence of holding hands in public seemed so trivial.
One night after they watched a movie and walked around the mall, Autumn-Grace was quiet.
Tyler noticed and he knew what was bothering her. He couldn’t fix it for her; she had to come clean with him. He was relieved when she finally turned to him and asked,
“Doesn’t that bother you at all?”
Tyler looked at her as he licked the ice cream cone they were sharing, “Does what bother me? Mint chocolate chip? No…it’s growing on me.” He teased.
“Tyler, be serious!” Autumn-Grace stopped and turned to him. “The woman who gave us our ice cream was staring. That woman in the red coat that just passed us was staring. The older couple behind us at the movies was staring. Are you really going to tell me that doesn’t bother you?” Autumn-Grace asked him, impatiently.
“First of all, baby, I didn’t notice if they were staring. I was staring at you.” Tyler leaned in to kiss her lightly on her nose. “Second, it’s okay if they do stare. I don’t mind if everyone knows I have the most beautiful woman in the place.” Tyler kissed each of her eyes. “The question is…you obviously care, so why, baby? Why does it bother you so much?”
Autumn-Grace jerked away from him.
“Tyler James Jordan, it doesn’t bother me that I am with you and you know it. It certainly didn’t bother me earlier tonight.” She said, arching her left eyebrow pointedly and Tyler smiled at the memory.
They continued walking in silence for a few minutes and sat down on a bench, as they watched people go by. Finally, she shook her head and looked at him with tears in her eyes. Tyler put his arm around her and waited.
Autumn-Grace wiped her eyes. “It bothers me that people have a problem with you.”
Tyler stood up without speaking a word.
Autumn-Grace looked up at him. “What’s wrong?”
“Baby, who said they have a problem with me?” He asked, as he pitched the ice cream cone in the nearest trash can.
“Oh my god, Tyler, you know what I meant. I didn’t mean you…I mean, us, we, you and me. Please don’t think…” Autumn-Grace trailed off, as she stood up. She didn’t know what to say. She stood there for a moment with her eyes closed and shook her head.
“Autumn-Grace, I know what you meant.” Tyler walked away from her. She tried to catch up to him to explain, but he refused to speak to her. She could feel the anger coming from him as he walked ahead of her. She shoved her hands in her pocket and followed him out of the mall.
As they reached the car, he didn’t open the door for her as he normally did. He waited for her to get in, barely, before he backed out of the parking lot. Autumn-Grace expected him to take her home and never speak to her again.
Instead, she was surprised when he took her to the lake, which lined the front of the most expensive houses in their town.
