Autumn Grace: Part 2

February 13th 2007 00:43
Autumn-Grace came to a screeching halt at the full-service station. As she waited for an attendant, she grew angrier as she rehashed the conversation with her mother. “I have a problem…” she muttered under her breath. She looked at the clock and then back at the gas station. Still no one came. She knew what was going on. This was a perfect example of what she had been trying to tell her mother. She couldn’t believe her relationship was this big of an issue for the small-minded bigots in her small town. With every passing minute that she sat there, she grew angrier. She refused to leave. They would provide service to her, no matter how long she had to wait. Finally, after about fifteen minutes, an attendant lumbered out to the car.

“Can I help you?” The older gentleman asked her, as he absent-mindedly chewed on a toothpick and leaned against the driver’s side door.

“Oh, I don’t know. I usually come in here and just park for the hell of it!” Autumn-Grace spat at him, barely able to contain herself.
“’Scuse me..?” The attendant asked, looking confused.
“I have been sitting here, as if you didn’t know, for the past fifteen minutes waiting for service.”
“Ma’am, I’m sorry but…”
“Don’t EVEN try to give me an excuse. You think I don’t know what’s going on here? Do you think that I am dumb because I date a black man? Is that what your little racist mind came up with?” She screeched.
“Ma’am..”
“Well, let me tell you something…you may not like it. You may not agree with interracial relationships. But it’s none of your damn business. Now, do your job and fill up my car! Check the fluids while you are at it.” Autumn-Grace said with her most condescending tone.
“Ma’am, I’ve been tryin’ to tell you that we just opened…Didn’t you see the sign there on the door? You got here ‘bout fifteen minutes before we opened up for business. I seen you out here but I can’t turn the pumps on early, the boss don’t like it ‘cause people start makin’ a habit of it, y’know.”

For the second time that morning, Autumn’s mouth gaped open. She slid her sunglasses back on, “Oh. Well. Fill it up, please, and the fluids still need to be checked.”
The attendant nodded and went about his job, chuckling to himself.

Autumn-Grace was standing on the doorstep of Tyler’s house, crying, when he answered the door. Without a word, he pulled her into his arms and shut the door.

Tyler let Autumn-Grace cry for a bit before asking any questions. After awhile, she pulled herself together and looked up at him, deciding not to tell him about her morning, especially not about the gas station. She wanted to bury her head in his lap again at the thought of it. He smiled at her and despite herself, she smiled. He was beautiful. He hated it when she said that, but he was beautiful to her. He had the biggest, dark brown eyes she had ever seen with curly black lashes. They still got to her and it had been four years since she had seen them for the first time. Tyler towered over her 5’4” frame at 6’3”. He was chiseled from hours spent at the gym and from the training he received through the National Guard. His only imperfection that Autumn-Grace could see was a small scar beneath his left eyebrow that he had gotten as a child from an accident on the merry-go-round. Autumn-Grace didn’t really consider the tiny scar an imperfection and often kissed it at the end of their dates.

“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong or do you want to stare at me all day?” He asked her while crossing his eyes at her.
“Stop it!” She threw her head back and laughed. She thought of how much she loved being with him. She shook her head,
“You know what’s wrong. It’s the same thing over and over and you know what? I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” She said, leaning in to kiss him. “Okay? Tell me that’s okay, Tyler.” She whispered into his ear.
“It’s okay.” He whispered back, kissing her. Autumn-Grace stood up before him, reaching out for his hand. She looked into his eyes and without a word, the couple made their way to Tyler’s bedroom for the first time.

In the back of his mind, between the murmurs and sighs, Tyler wondered if Autumn was feeling the need to prove something to him. She was a virgin and Tyler needed to know that what they were doing was for the right reason. Tyler asked her, like a mantra between the kisses they shared if Autumn-Grace was sure this was what she wanted, to which she answered him by shutting the door.

The thought faded from Tyler’s mind as their clothes fell to the floor.

Love the gas station attendant's accent and nonchalant mannerisms! Moving on to part 3.
