Avatar Movie Review

March 12th 2010 00:06
Out of this world and into the jungles of Pandora. We follow the journey of Jake Sully, a paraplegic ex-marine, that is forced to take the place of his twin brother who is tragically murdered before he was supposed to be shipped out to Pandora. Jake's mission is to use a genetically created being called an Avatar, that is a combination of human DNA and DNA of the natives called the Na'vi. Jake is needed to help lower the level of aggression and possible out break of war between the humans who occupy the planet, mining for a valuable mineral, and the Na'vi.

I was really disappointed that this movie didn't win the Academy Award for movie of the year after it opened our eyes to the possibly future of the movie industry. I think it could be because the 2D version of the movie isn't as good as the 3D version. The 3D emurses you in the environment and you just let go to enjoy the ride of your life with the alien landscape and animals on the planet. The imagination put into this movie from all cast and crew makes Avatar a truely not-to-be-missed movie experience.

Even as highly as I regard Avatar, I can't completely give it a 5 out of 5, so I give it a 4.5/5 out of 5 because some of the movie can drag here and there. If only for a couple of minutes and there are probably some different areas I would've chosen to show more of. However, if this is the quality of movie that is going to push all movies after it to raise their game, then I look forward to the coming future of the movie industry.

See Avatar no matter what.

Sherlock Holmes Movie Review

March 11th 2010 23:54
Elementary my readers, Sherlock Holmes has returned and is uniquely played by Robert Downey Jr. Robert has truely come of age since his younger days and it is good to see that age has truely made him a wiser individual. This re-make stars Robert as Sherlock and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, on the trail of Lord Henry Blackwood played by Mark Strong. There are plenty of twists and turns through this movie with the death and resurrection of Lord Henry Blackwood, causing England and secret socities to believe that he is truely capable of dark magic.

The movie length seems a bit long at first but this movie has a bit of everything. Laughs, action, romance and can be summarised by simply calling it a rollercoaster of good times. Definately looking forward to a sequel when it's released in the next couple of years. I only had a problem with a few of the costumes and possible over acting of Robert in small sections but it didn't deter me enough to hate this movie. Robert has been great in all the roles I have watched since he re-surfaced in Iron Man.

This movie is a good one for friends to all see together, but not necessarily a family event with children under 13. The supernatural elements can be a little creepy and so I suggest you try to keep an open mind when see this film. Looking forward to what Guy Richie can do with the sequel. I give Sherlock a 4 out of 5.

Old Dogs Movie Review

March 11th 2010 23:41
In the spirit of memorable team pairings, such as Jack Lemmon and Walter Watthau, Old Dogs brings us the pairing of Robin Williams and John Travolta. Robin plays a character by the name of Dan Rayburn and John plays Charlie Reed, who are long time friends that are the owners of a sports marketing firm looking to secure an alliance with a company in Japan. Chaos ensues when Dan (Robin) is contacted by an old flame/fling (Kelly Preston) and upon having lunch together, is revealed to be the father of her children. Kelly's character, Vicki Greer, is about to go to prison and spontaneously needed to reveal to Dan (Robin) that he is a father. This sets up the rest of the movie for laughs, drama and other twists and turns.

Needless to say, I was a bit sceptical of the coupling of Travolta and Williams because of Williams' outlandish behaviour in other movies and interviews but he manages to keep the majority of it in check for this film and that could be because he is the main chanracter affected emotionally during the film. This leaves Travolta to turn on his flair and charm. Seth Green adds a few laughs but never really has a huge impact on the movie.

This movie has coped a lot of criticism about not being funny but I have to admit that I did enjoy it. It's not the greatest comedy but it relies more on thought out comedy and props without the swearing, making it a good film for the family.

I give Old Dogs a 2.5/3 out of 5.

Ninja Assassin Movie Review

March 11th 2010 23:25
Ninja Assassin stars Rain and is produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers. The movie is exactly as the title would suggest, focusing on a Ninja Assassin, by the name of Raizo (Rain), that is conflicted within himself. The movie does a lot of back telling through out which explains how Raizo was trained and is the force that he is today. It is a shame that this movie hasn't be better advertised, seeing as how it's from the team that brought you The Matrix Films and Speed Racer.

The movie provides plenty of action and an endless amount ninja stars and CG blood. This is definately a popcorn movie but those of you that get squeemish easily should probably avoid. Fight scenes are a plenty and they are not for the faint hearted. Typical showdowns occur towards the end of the film as it tries to tie together points created with the back story telling. The movie never loses itself in trying to be something that it's not but can become ridiculous in certain areas like Shoot Em Up.

Dear John Movie Review

March 11th 2010 23:06
Dear John is another adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks Book starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. The movie is about a U.S. Special Forces soldier, named John (Channing Tatum), that is on leave from duty and has returned home to spend time with his father, played by Richard Jenkins. John spends the time surfing and keeping to himself before a unique opportunity to become the hero, finds him jumping off a pier to save the bag of Savannah (Amanda Seyfried). Romance blossums before John has to return to complete his tour of duty for the next 12 months. This is where the "Dear John" part of the movie comes into it with the couple constantly writing each other while Savannah is at college and John in numerous locations, which he cannot divulge to her.

I will stop there from going further into the details of the movie and tell you that it doesn't really offer anything new in the way of romantic movies and in many ways feels a lot like the other movie adaption of a Nicholas Sparks book, The Notebook. You can't help but feel that the exact formula is almost applied to this movie. Boy meets Girl, Boy goes away and Girl finds someone else, Boy comes back, Drama ensues but in the typical style of American fim making, Boy and Girl find way back to another. There are a few twists and turns in this movie which keeps it interesting and the characters, John and Savannah, are played well by Channing and Amanda. I would recommend this as a date movie and not a boys night out.
