My Father s Secrets

September 8th 2009 04:39
Dad, me and Mom
Dad, me and Mom

- Come on! Smash it again! Harder!
This is what my father heard when he arrived at his new fraternity house, where he was going to live while studying for his bachelor. He went to the backyard to find four blokes trying to get the pasta out of the pressure cooker after leaving it cooking for a long time.
To be the eternal hero of the house and to be protected above everyone else, it took him only one phrase:
- I know how to cook.
And truly, he sure does, like a master! I love the story of how he was inspired into learning:
It was one of his first fishing trips without his mom, with all the mates camping next to a river. He arrived to find his cousin holding a pot of boiling water while his uncle holding the 5k bag of rice pouring the grain directly into the water. Even being only 12 he knew one thing:
- This is not how my mom cooks rice!
That was when he decided to learn how to cook and survive anywhere. During Uni he cooked everything, his only rule was that any strange meat had to be dead and clean! He never questioned the origin of the meat or the talking about missing cats, chickens and ducks in the neighbourhood. The downside was sometimes to be awaken at three am by a bunch of hungry guys whose sobriety was highly questionable.
From my dad I learned most of my secrets. My sister and I cook as he does: no recipes, using all the leftovers in the fridge, creating food out of thin air in fifteen minutes. That is the result of countless Friday nights seated while he pampered us with delicious food as well as from family meetings and weekend’s lunches and dinners.
We learned from him a lot of other things like the power of common sense, how to enjoy life, how to be calm and rational in difficult positions. He passed to us the best Guardian Angels on Earth and Heaven. Dad is the kind that gets his Angel to send a mechanic, in the middle of nowhere when the car breaks down. The guy fixes a microscopic problem using a fish knife and we go on our merry way.
I also learned with him how to live happily every day. What I didn’t really learn was a secret he keeps from his time at the Uni. Once he started telling me some story but finished mid sentence:
- Youngsters are naughty, some of the things that I’ve done...
I’ve been trying to get the full story out of him for years but all I get is him to blush, start laughing and playing “mute”. Doesn’t say a word. I think I will never get this secret out of him!

Logo Ritmo Brazilian Festival BraCCA

“Ritmo” means rhythm and it is the name for this Brazilian Cultural celebration, an initiative of BraCCA, Brazilian Community Council of Australia. The event has been happening since 2001 and this is its ninth edition. Ritmo Brazilian Festival is scheduled for the 20th September 2009 at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour, one of Sydney’s most breathtaking sites. This event is so important that it has a reserved date in Sydney’s calendar every year.
Attendees are entertained with the range of activities, involving music, dance and food; this year to be extended up to the Chinese Gardens. Starting at 11 am RITMO is a major showcase of Brazilian culture in Australia and also the most important event for the Brazilian community in the country. Ritmo is sponsored by several companies such that believe in the continuous success of the festival.

The expectation is for 27,000 participants this year, seven thousand more than the record number achieved in 2008. BraCCA has plans to have Ritmo in Brisbane in 2010. The big success of this event is due to the charismatic ways of the Brazilian people and the diversity of presentations such as Capoeira, Samba, Axé, Pagode, other traditional dances from Northeast and Brazilian popular music performances.
It is an opportunity to try the best of the Brazilian food and drinks, like Feijoada, a traditional Brazilian dish made with black beans, pork and sausages and eaten with rice. Brazilian cuisine is a mixture of exotic ingredients with a hint of passion. At Ritmo there will be an array of exquisite flavours to be tasted.

People can learn the true meaning of the word Ginga with the amazing display of acrobatic movements from Capoeira, an African-Brazilian style of martial arts. Discover why Samba is famous worldwide and you can also see arts and crafts from all over Brazil. It is a place to bring a picnic rug, slather on the sunscreen, sit back, enjoy the show and have a fun day out. The entrance is free!
It is a day to join the nation that introduced Samba to the world for a time filled with its joys and colours, live music and dancing. An occasion to share the tolerant and harmonic atmosphere when the Brazilian people join the Australian multiculturalism, sharing what their best with all other cultures.

It is time for the June Parties

june parties bracca

Time to meet friends, try delicious food, enjoy the colours and atmosphere.
The “Festa Juninas” are folk celebrations that take place everywhere in Brazil, from parties that engage whole cities to small family parties. They happen through the month of June in comemoration of the saints’ days: St John, St Peter and St Paul. They are about dancing, dressing in funny folk costumes, eating delicious food, drinks to warm up the heart and a lot of excitement.
BraCCA organizes its annual party in Sydney so all can experience a little piece of Brazil. The best pieces are the food, I felt like a child in a candy store last year. Everywhere I looked I saw something that I wanted to eat or drink: party pastries, churrasco (barbecue meat), delicious sweets and cakes, cheese bread, Guaraná, sugar cane juice, coconut water, Feijoada (black beans) and other scrumptious dishes.
It is a great opportunity to meet new and old friends, there is music all day and the traditional dancing for kids.

If you want to have a full Brazilian experience without having to cross the ocean you have to come to this event!

Whatever ceis want! (Engilsh)

view from the plane

To be bilingual is an adventure; trilingual and multilingual must be even better.
It is common to hear Brazilians that live in Australia for some time complain that their English is not getting any better and the Portuguese is getting worse all the time. It’s inevitable to start creating mixtures of both languages

The Gift for Mum

Family in Ilawara Fly

Most of us, BraCCA News’ readers, have our mums overseas. I keep imagining that here, this being such a new country with so many immigrants, there are not as many older mums around.
That is why I am giving some gifts ideas to send. Far away moms love to see the daughters and sons more than anything else. So sending a DVD (in a proper format that she will be able to see) is a hit. Whatever you say or do is not important, she will love it anyway

Why become a BraCCA member

February 23rd 2009 03:45
Logo BraCCA

A few friends asked me: Why should I become a BraCCA member? What are the benefits?
Funny that when I say “it’s the right thing to do” they look at me like I’m a bit nuts. Well I am a bit crazy but in this case I’m absolutely in my right mind.

Upside Down in New Zealand
Upside Down in New Zealand

They say the world is going to end on 2012! According to the Mayan prophecies. Such good news! Now you have the perfect excuse to make all your dreams come true. Go crazy, risk, enjoy, change your life. Sure you have to be prepared in case the world doesn’t end, like leaving some reserves, keeping the properties and not going into debt. But other than that, you have to get at least a third of your dreams in life! Do all that you can for that, move, put the wheels of fortune in motion. You should steal a kiss from that gorgeous lady across the street, offer flowers to a stranger, make someone’s day, do something nuts, look someone different deeply into his or her eyes.
You could wear socks of different colours, create some funny little lies, belly dance on top of your work table... or howl to the moon

Tania Fortaleza Brazil
To write short stories is to use everyone’s life into it, you write about your biggest follies but also about friends and families. Everyone is turned into characters.
I’m a Brazilian writer, almost Australian. Here I tell stories about life in Aussie land from my South American point of view.
Here I’ll paste my texts published in BraCCA news, printed newsletter from the The Brazilian Community Council of Australia www.bracca.org
