Descendants of Darkness

July 19th 2008 20:18
I call upon the twelve Gods that stand before me...

DODYNM
Tzusuki and Hisoka (left to right)

SUMMARY

Descendants of Darkness, which I will hereby refer to by it's Japanese title Yami No Matsuei, is a story of a seperate governmental branch located in Meifu. This branch controls supernatural affairs and it's jobs are carried out by shinigami (and in some cases, the shinigami's shikagamis). The main character is a mysterous man named Tzusuki, who is paired up with is new partner Hisoka at the beginning of the series. Together, their job is to take care of supernatural happens.

REVIEW

Honestly, for an anime based off a such a wonderful manga, I was seriously expecting way more than I got. The Yami no Matsuei anime is a far cry from the magnificence of the original manga. A deep, insightful, though depressing and yet humorous, manga.

The anime takes only the most vital stories from the manga and slaps them together haphazardly, leaving out plenty of the good stories. This also cuts down on the potential for character development which sometimes leaves the viewer a bit confused about certain things. It contains four of the manga stories and the manga hasn't finished yet. I'm pretty against animating unfinished mangas.

The dubbing is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I just want to kill myself everytime I hear it. All the characters voices are extreme fake-sounding and some of the voices are just absolutely, devastingly awful. The biggest one is Watari's voice. He sound BRITISH. He's not British, he was never said to be British, and is fact from KANSAI. Wakaba's voice (although she doesn't show up too often) is the same rehashed little high-school girl voice. While I might say that the concept of that voice style is appealing, the voice acteress didn't really try at all to make it right.

I'll give them a little credit for the art because with the absolutely beautiful but difficult art they were working with, I could see how it would be difficult to animate and they actually did a halfway decent job at it. The animation style isn't exactly an award-winning sort of piece, but it's definately good for what they had to work with and to live up to.

And the music. The music is awful. I guess I could give it credit for the "Devil's Trill" piece, a lovely violin piece but the rest is just ear-bleedingly awful.

RATING
Story: D (for the anime. A for the manga)
Dub: F
Art: B
Music: Fplus

You could go ahead and see it. But honestly, I really don't think it's worth your time or anybody elses.

Ghost Talker's DayDream

"Don't talk to them, don't look at them, just ignore them."

GWDD
Main Character Middle: Misaki.

NOTE: Rating 16 , according to some is 18 .

SUMMARY

In this four episode OVA (though I hear they're releasing a second volume), they chornicle the life of a spirit medium name Misaki. Misaki is an pure albino, even void of pubic hair, and for a living is a dominatrix. She also gets paid via the government for performing spirit medium works. She is none too fond of the fact that she can see the spirits and is constantly attempting to refuse the jobs.

REVIEW

It's hard to say exactly what I think about this series. It's kind of one of those in between animes where you just can't figure out whether it's good or not. I'd say on a 1-10 rating base, I'd give it a six or a seven (MAYBE an 8, depending on which episode we're talking about). It's decent, that's about all I'll say there.

The voice acting can also go both ways. There are some that suck and some that are pretty well done. Misaki's voice is very well-done, though I think that her voice actor does several different characters, such as Anzai, a character in the 3rd and 4rd episode. Soichiro's voice is decent too. The only voice that grates on me is the high-school girl's voice. Her voice is very fake and so are the voices of a lot of the ghosts.

The story is decent, though I have to say that the first episode didn't come out so smoothly. It was a little confusing in the respect of exactly how the person being haunted was related to the victims (I'm sorry, I just can't remember the high-school girl's name). There is also this moment at the end that makes absolutely no sense, because this lightening bolt or SOMETHING fries the murder and there isn't any explaination. I couldn't tell if Misaki did it, or the ghosts did it, or what.

The rest of the episodes are pretty solid and finish up pretty well, tying everything back together. The second episode was about how not all ghosts are friendly (one tries to kill the schoolgirl), and it also ties this in with Misaki's childhood. The other two episodes focus around an insane girl name Ichinose who died from suicide after killing twelve children. Any time that Misaki gets involved in a case, she seems very disinterested in the case.

Also, if you like fanservice, this series is definately for you. It has full-frontal nudity plus the main character works as a dominatrix. There is a stalker teen who takes pictures of the man character, although he's fairly harmless. There is also a scene in the first episode that I think might make some people want the age rating raised (I, for one, don't care about that) due to some sexualty. Some of the violence is pretty bloody, but there isn't any full-frontal guts ripping out, face ripped off sort of stuff.

The music is fairly basic and not too noticable. It really just kinda blends into the story and really doesn't hit you anywhere special at any given point. The ending theme is okay, not the best, but it's okay.

This series is very sad and sometimes downright depressing. The part about Ichinose is incredibly sad and will really hit a chord when you watch it.

RATING
Story: B-
Dub: C
Art: B-
Music: C

You can watch and I recomend it but I can't say it's something that you need to drop everything to go and get right now. It's so-so, and worth a watch. But nothing fantasic.

Beating Angel Dokuro-chan

July 11th 2008 23:16
"Pi piru piru piru pipiru pi!"

Beat Angel
Dokuro-Chan the Beat Angel

NOTE: I am not 100% certain, but I don't think this has been released in English yet.

SUMMARY:
Beat Angel Dokuro-Chan features a young angel girl who comes from the future to stop the main character, Sakura-kun, from creating a device that makes all girls stop developing once they turn twelve, which the boy claims to know nothing about.
As she 'protects' Sakura-kun, she is constantly killing him and bring him back to life. Several other characters seem to have it out for him, such as Sabbat-chan. If Dokuro is NOT killing Sakura, she is sexually teasing him.

REVIEW:
This series is quite honestly the most disgusting piece of shit I have EVER seen. About ten times per episode you get to see the main character get blown to shit via a club that Dokuro-chan owns and to honest, it's usually completely puke-worthy. There is blood and brains everywhere for no real reason.

The next point of the plot is bascially sexual innuedo. You see either the panties or the breast of every female character every five to ten minutes in any episode. If Dokuro-chan believes that Sakura-kun is as much as THINKING a perverted thought, she literally kills him as brutally as she can. Sabbat-chan also seems set on killing him for something that they refuse to actually show proof that Sakura-kun actually made.

Another thing is the basic fact that the character Dokuro-chan is just an extreme rehash of every stupid violent girl who decides she WILL get everything she wants from the main character and will throw a bloody fit over just about nothing. I don't think if you combined the IQs of all the characters in the show that you would get a number over 50.

All I can really say for it is that the art is decent. It's got this cute thing right off the bat that I noticed was very similar to that of Me, My, Strawberry Eggs. If you like twisted art to be throw in as well, you'll get it. I suppose I should give them credit for doing a job at thinking up new disgusting ways to kill Sakura-kun (Kenny rehash, anyone? Followed by a new catchphrase, even!).

RATING
Story: D
Dub: U/A
Art: A-
Music: C-

Thinking all this over, I can honestly say I have no clue why this series is so popular. It is nothing short of disgusting and completely pointless.
