Atlanta Travel: Part 1: ColdLanta

February 17th 2011 12:01
HotLanta. People called Atlanta Hot for a number of reasons but the meaning got lost on other people who thought that HotLanta referred to the weather. Well it's time to demystify the "HotLanta" slogan. Indeed, it's time to tell the truth about the south.

The "Hot" meant super fun nights on the town. Super good sports teams - the Braves got Hot, the Falcons got Hot, the Hawks the Thrashers. Certain night clubs around town were "hot". Being in Atlanta on a Friday or Saturday night in the summer was the "hot" thing to do. The "Hot" ticket. Then there is the Heat. Not our soccer team, the weather heat.

Contrary to popular belief, the south is just like the rest of the country in winter -- Cold! ColdLanta! I've lived here 49 years and I can say that I never noticed how cold Atlanta really is until maybe five years ago when I became Cold Intolerant. I want the Sunshine and Palm Trees if you know what I mean. But, seriously, Atlanta is cold. There is no fall or spring here. On Tuesday it's 20 degrees in the full sunlight, then the next morning it is 72 in the shade. On September 1, the days are at 90 degrees. On September 14, the temp. has dropped into the 40's and 50's. And that's where they stay mostly until December 20th when they drop into the 20's and 30's. It's Feb. 19 today and the morning temp is 43 degrees. It wont warn up completely until late April, and even then it is subject to sudden temp drops into the 50's in May.

ColdLanta is cold from September to May. Occasional hot spells give the "illusion" of the HotLanta image. Remember, if it's June, it's warm, July and August or scorching, September is scorching then turning to freezing in an instant, October and November are unpredictable but usually cool, December goes from cool to Arctic. The Arctic temps stick aroung until late February sometime March when it becomes totally unpredictable but usually cool/cold, then March/April/May become those bothersome months where you wear an arctic coat in the morning and shorts and tee shirt by noon.

HotLanta is the HOT destination but just remember ColdLanta and you wont go wrong with your traveling clothes.
