Yesterday, at work, I spoke to a conventioneer who wanted to know where to go for a fun evening. Now before I go any further, I work in a "public relations" job of sorts and am exposed to thousands of normal people. This wasn't some "fun" hungry business man asking me about naughty things. This was a legitimate question. My mind kind of went blank, Uhhh.
Finally I said a couple of places, but they had heard of Buckhead, so I kind of agreed, although in my mind I was saying Buckhead? OK, here is my official list. First off, Buckhead was the place to be years ago. The Buckhead downtown area was a huge collection of bars, restaurants, and boutiques. It was a drunken center of adult activity at night. It was the place to be seen! But a group of investors decided that Buckhead needed a premiere Highrise, high end mall, entertainment, and living actraction. They bought all the acreage that was Buckhead, kicked the restaurants and stores out, bulldozed the whole lot, and started construction. Then the recession hit and the hole in the ground has been sitting for years, empty. No work going on there.
OK. The List:
1.Centenninal Park. During the day or night, this park is like Central Park is to New York. It is gorgeously landscaped. There are water features, trails, and statues and memorials dedicated to the 1996 Summer Olympics that were right here all over Atlanta. To the east is downtown, south is CNN Center - The Georgia Dome and World Congress Center, to the west is Marietta Street with it's multitude of new restaurants/night clubs and leads to West Midtown - another night club/restaurant/interior desiner mecca shopping district, and finally to the north is The World of Coke - The Georgia Aquarium - And currently running, The Peter Pan tent and show.
2. Ride down Peachtree. Midtown is "where it's at". Get out of your car or taxi once you are there and walk from restaurant to restaurant or attractions. On warm Spring and Summer nights, the street is filled with cars and pedestrans are everywhere. The police keep an eye out for panhandlers so you can relax and enjoy what Atlanta has to offer. You will find The Fox Theatre and at the nothern end, The Woodruff Arts Center - Art and Symphony.
3. Get a Creative Loafing news paper magazine. They are free and on most street corners. Everything that is going on around town is listed.
4. Atlantic Station - A City Within A City! Thjis was built as the answer to innercity living and was actually supposed to be a place where you live and work and shop. You could live in one of the highrise condos or low rise townhomes, work in an office in one of the office buildings, and shop in the humongous open city mall. Yes! The mall looks like a city or small town. The two and three story city buildings jouse stores and boutiques and livings space.
5. Buckhead is for church. Buckhead is a shopping district now. There are apecialty stores everywhere and fine dining is king. This is the luxury area of Atlanta. This is where the rick and powerful eat, shop, and live. Lenox Square mall and Phipps Plaza are the biggies and then there are smaller areas everywhere. You can even get a Buckhead guide to find your way around. We go to Buckhead Church on Sundays. The 2nd largest church in North America (congregation wise). Andy Stanley uses the "video" church format, which is awesome and must be experienced and Christian Rock leads us in worship. It is church for non-church people We have 21 sister campuses all over the U.S. and we are growing.
Well that's it for a short trip. Tomorrow I will add a few that I forgot but am remembering. Have Fun.
