So the Aussies stuffed up in Brisbane in the second innings after a Peter Siddle hat trick and a 307 run stand from Michael Hussey and Brad Haddin? So again the argument comes to the fore front that Australia doesnt have the quality to take 20 wickets without the likes of McGrath and Warne? Xavier Doherty, when selected, first thing asked, "Are you the next Shane Warne?".
What a stupid question, of course he isnt, and he probably never will be. It gives us some idea about the pressure the team is under to perform. But the issue needs to be addressed. Is Ricky Ponting past his best days as a captain or are we simply not producing the quality of attack to take 20 in a test match? I think Johnson needs a break and has to go back to club cricket or the domestic competition to find what makes him tick, we need him to perform.
I think Ryan Harris and Doug Bollinger should have been in the Brisbane test and were unlucky to miss out but will be certain starters in Adelaide replacing Johnson and Hilfenhaus.
I also believe Marcus North has to be cut from the team. As a number 6 batsmen he doesnt offer enough consistency to hold his position as a batsmen. Ponting wants him there because of his part time orthodox bowling, but lets be real, if he is selected at number 6 in a test he is there to score runs. Callum ferguson needs to come in at number 6, he is a proven performer in that position at ODI level and has made a mountain of shield runs in the past couple of seasons.
