Are You Full Of S#$@%? What You're Eating Could Be The Cause!
January 8th 2008 05:35
Ah yes, this is one of those topics that no one wants to really speak of, it's talked about in hushed tones and often can be the cause of much embarrassment. Well, I'm here to breach the divide as it were and come right to the point of this blog, are you ready? Ok, here it goes, Chronic Constipation. There, I've put it out there and now we can all just relax and I'll finish telling you what you can do to alleviate and perhaps eliminate this "crappy" condition that seems to plague more and more of us in todays' society.
If you're like most of us, you're an "eat on the run, work late, cold pizza and hot wings" guy or gal. The closest thing to a veggie that you've seen in many days is the lettuce they put on the plate that accompanies your burger. You think a balanced diet is a meal you can consume while driving down the freeway and talking on your cell phone.
Remember that old adage, You are what you eat? Well, truer words were never spoken. Now days, more and more of us are suffering from poor eating habits and poor diet. If you watch television at all, you've probably seen an advertisement that tells you to "ask your doctor" about a certain new drug that has just been released that can help you with your chronic constipation. What is this world coming to when you have to ask a doctor to give you something so that you can, (excuse the wording please) go pooh. Oh and by the way, the side effects from using this wonder drug are: Nausea, headaches, diarrhea and if you are a woman you must be on birth control and you must not become pregnant since this drug could harm the unborn child. Do you really want this drug in your body? If it can harm a pregnant woman and her unborn child? Yikes...I shudder to think what the long term ramifications of taking this drug are.
So ok, if you suffer from constipation, chronic or otherwise...there are things you can do to help yourself. Start eating better. Yep, that's a biggie...So you're saying, I eat out all the time and don't have time to prepare special foods. You have time to grab an apple as you run out the door? Good...that's a start. Apples are full of natural fiber...not only do they taste great, but they will help to get things moving, as it were. An apple a day will definitely help keep the doctor away. With as many different varieties of apples, there is bound to be one that you enjoy. With the exception of a few, most fruits and veggies are what your body needs to keep things in balance. Once you get in the habit of eating fruits and veggies every day, you will begin to see a change in your bodily functions. Start out by grabbing an apple, or some carrot sticks...eating them as a snack...maybe some celery...some berries, a pear or peach? Other foods that are high in fiber are brown rice, ground flaxseed (sprinkle over cereal, into other dishes), and whole grains. Now if you truly can't stomach veggies and just aren't happy with having to eat brown rice and celery sticks...you can of course go to the local drug store and buy one of several "fiber" supplements...however, I suggest you try eating better for the long haul and oh yeah, don't forget to keep hydrated, and no, drinking 5 or 6 cans of soda and a pot of coffee a day is NOT hydrating your body. You need to drink more water. Grab an apple and a bottle of water as you run out the door...you'll feel better and you'll end up "regular."
A word of caution, if you've had a diet lacking in veggies and fruits then you may experience some gas at first...you're body will adjust to the changes...just make sure you don't over do it. Eating an entire bag of apples in one day will definitely be too much of a good thing. All of the above tips can help you regulate your bowels and eliminate constipation. Another important point to remember is that you need to take time for yourself...take time to relax, unwind and allow nature to take it's course. Stress can also play an important role in your inability to eliminate waste.
In this world of prescription drugs, I say we take control of our own bodies and do what we can do to be healthy...to prevent disease and keep the doctor away. I think it's time we tried some simpler methods of treating what ails us. Let's eat healthy, live healthy and become healthy. Here's to figuring out what we need through the "process of elimination."
Until next time, Here's to your health.
**Please note: I am not a doctor, and I recommend that you consult with your Physician if you have any questions or for any unusual symptoms that persist.
