Are You Always Angry or Disappointed?
March 14th 2007 01:07
Today I read an interesting article that I got from a really good book, Self Empowerment, which talks about the demands and disappointments of the many people in this world today.
I too am a person who sometimes likes to demand or expect something is happening in my way, and when things don’t happen, I get depressed. It was after years being close to God I finally calm down myself. Yet sometimes there are times that the undesired anger still surfaces once a while.
This article gives a broader view of things, and I hope those who are not close to God and still can’t figure out why they are always anger, or things just go wrong all the time, find this article useful.

Have Preferences, Not Demands
When things are beyond your control do you feel miserable? Do you decide how the world should be or make rules as to how everyone should behave?
When the world does not obey your rules, you get angry! Let us say that you expect friends to return favours, people to appreciate you and that your spouse should remember your birthday. These expectations may sound reasonable, but often, they do not happen the way you want them to. So you end up being frustrated and disappointed.
There is a better strategy. Have fewer demands. Instead, have preferences! For situations beyond your control, tell yourself: I would prefer “A”, but if “B” happens, it is ok! This is really a game that you play in your head. It is a shift in attitude, and it gives you more peace of mind. You prefer that people are polite, but they are rude, it should not ruin your day. You prefer sunshine but rain is ok!
To become happy, instead of expecting the world to change, we should change our attitude. Life will bring obstacles and difficulties, yet it is our thoughts and attitude that enable us to see them as challenges and gain victory over them.
Thought for reflection:
It is not what happens to you that determines your happiness. It is how you think about what happens to you.
