Are Writers Over-Represented In Writing?

March 14th 2008 06:47
Have you ever wondered about the preponderance of writers in literature?
Or is it just me?
Writers In Writing is my attempt to create The List - a comprehensive (and collaborative) collection of books and films with writers as characters.

oh yes practically every stephen king chacter ever created haha well the dark half, the secret window, misery and 1408 spring to mind (as they were ones turned into film)

wonderboys, adaptation, and stranger than fiction are all film where the art of writing is the subject

Hey Morgan! Thanks for your comment - my first!
Stay tuned for future blogs where I'll talk about why I must create this list and how I'm going to do it.
The fabulous thing about it is that I expect the sharing will lead me to more fabulous literature and films. For example, Stephen King was definitely one of the usual suspects I had in mind, although I haven't read two of his titles you mentioned here.
Similarly, Stranger Than Fiction and Adaptation (two of my faves) are already on The List but I have to admit that I haven't seen Wonderboys and now I know that I will have to. Thanks.

Hi Jayne,

Stephen Donaldson has a writer as the title character in 'The chronicles of Tomas Covenant'. (first, second and last chronicles - series of novels).
Hope that helps your list.

Kim

Thanks Kim.
All suggestions are kindly appreciated. I have not heard of this series but shall keep an eye out for it. All in the name of broadening my literary horizons.
Cheers,
Jayne

"Write about what you know" is the reason I suppose.

Hey Harry,
You and I are in agreeance - my other blog (So Why The List) mentions exactly that. Thanks for reading.
Cheers,

Hi again Jayne,

I recently read 'Dreams of Speaking' by Gail Jones, an Australian author whose heroine is writing a book on modernity. She encounters and becomes friends with a Japanese guy in Paris who is writing a biography of Alexander Bell, and they become friends.

As for film, 'Finding Forrester' is about a young author finding a mentor, 'Freedom Writers' is about schoolkids who learn to use the diaries a new teacher gives them to work through some of their issues, and in 'Girl, Interrupted', the main character goes on to write a book about the events of the story.
I also highly recommend Morgan's suggestion, 'Wonder Boys'.

Good luck!

Hey postmoderncritic,
What fab sugestions. I guess that, alongside The List of Writers in Writing, I am also compiling a list of great books to read/films to watch! Love the sound of Dreams of Speaking.
I've just read Morgan's review of Something's Gotta Give and it would seem that Diane Keaton's character is a 'playwright'!

Thanks for more great contributions,
Jayne

Also, if you're interested, I have a short story up on my blog, postmoderncritic.com, called 'Alluring Incongruity' which is a piece of metafiction, and features the struggles of a writer who experments with plays, prose fiction and poetry as part of her journey of self-discovery. You can find it amongst the 'Spotlight' posts.

Have a great day ~
Epiphanie
