Another pointless inquiry?

April 3rd 2008 11:41
According to the newspaper the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) is investigating grocery prices and competitiveness in the industry. The chairman, Graeme Samuel said that contradictory claims from the different parties was “fascinating”. Another word for bullshit?

The inquiry is to get to the bottom of why farmers are getting so little when everyone is forking out so much at the cash register. "We have parties who will privately tell us they are doing extremely well and making very good profit margins, and then in the public arena say that they are suffering," Mr Samuel has quoted. "There's either an inconvenient truth being told publicly or an inconvenient truth being told to us - or an untruth, as the case may be."

They want to assess whether or not shoppers are being treated fairly and even though this is supposed to be in the public interest some of the parties gave information in a private session today. The chairman stated that information aired in the private sessions had potential to be damaging if made public. Isn’t that the point?

This is just going to be like the whitewash about petrol prices. The oil companies aren’t rorting the system yet the prices go up every holiday and have nothing to do with oil prices. Every time they investigate they tell us there is no evidence of price fixing. Sure there isn’t. I saw a pig fly by today too.

I'm sure Coles and Woolworths will continue their domination and things will stay the same. It's the same with airlines, the smaller players get crushed and nobody does anything about it.

Exactly -- what are they going to do? Introduce price controls?

Heard anything from Jack's front lately?

This isn't useless it's great money for all of those involved.

Outcome? oh, we don't worry about the non-essentials. But the enquiry is just great, can't wait for the next one. They may pay me to make their coffee, better money than ad cents, I believe.

"Fascinating?" What's fascinating is how quickly money vanishes every payday. Maybe the flying pig took it?

I would love farmers to get more money from the prices I pay for natural produce...because they are the ones that do the hard work which we city folk wouldn't be able to cope with for one week! We complain about our jobs and our stresses but without the farmers, we would die from hunger!

And as expected there hasn't been a single word on this since.

I stopped buying fruit and vegetables from supermarket chains years ago. Not only is the produce over priced but it's also invariably of dubious quality.

Hi Johnny, I would love to know why farmers are getting so little and we are paying so much.

There must be a lot of middle men in there somewhere, I wonder if they'll ever tell us the truth.
