Valkyrie to be released on Christmas day

December 16th 2008 05:42
valkyrie

Nothing warms my heart more than an assassination movie on Christmas Day. I mean doesn't the plotting of a dictator's death behind his back just epitomize the holiday spirit? No? Well imagine that.

Aside from the fact that Valkyrie has Tom Cruise depicting the ringleader the group of Hitler's closest officers calculating against him, could MGM have picked a better way to guarantee this movie's demise than opening it on Christmas day? I think not. Now time may prove me wrong on this, but a dark World War II film premiering on the holiday celebrating the birth of the lord doesn't seem destined to be a blockbuster. But I may just be biased. I personally like my holiday season to be cheery and bright.

However, just to be fair here are what other critics have to say.

Variety -
"After a long takeoff, Valkyrie finally takes flight as a thriller in its second half but never soars very high... Cruise himself is a bit stiff but still adequate... [Valkyrie] has visual splendor galore, but is a cold work lacking in the requisite tension and suspense."

The Hollywood Reporter -
"Well-crafted historical thriller boasts fine performances but fails to probe the motives behind the plot to kill Hitler... Valkyrie is not the electric jolt [Tom Cruise] needs to jump-start [his career]."

Screen Daily -
"A serviceable if straightforward thriller... the film compensates for a lack of verve and action with solid production design and crisp performances from its cast. ...Singer misses key opportunities to inject a little energy and visual flash into the story, as exemplified by a clumsily-staged arrest sequence late in the film."

So, this one I leave up to you. Whenever, if ever, you choose to see this film (and hopefully not on Christmas Day) let me know if it is actually worth my $5 bucks to rent when it comes available at the video store.

The Happening

December 12th 2008 21:50
M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening

The tale of an eerie and unknown phenomenon causing people to kill themselves, M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening is just an overall sad piece of work. Despite having a cast of several great actors and actresses it definitely missed its calling. The characters in this film did little to engage the audience, they were underdeveloped sad portrayals of people trying to survive a horrible occurence. What little spark of emotion that may have been provoked came from feeling pity for the veritable onslaught of humans taking their own lives. And even this was fleeting as it was almost in the form off screen gunshots or screams, followed by the occasional body falling to the ground or far off and fleeting glimpse of the aftermath.

As a suspense film it was lackluster, relying heavily on sadly haunting music and slow filming speeds to create a sense of foreboding that just made for a somber tale. The only true suspense in the film came via a cranky old women who opens her home to our leading actor's small group seeking shelter from the happening. Her outbursts of cruelty and psychosis come far too late to make up for the rest of the films lack of intrigue. What little the story offers in way of explanation for the happening seems like an ill-begotten attempt to promote consciousness of the impact humans have on the earth

Where In The World Is The Movie Sequel

December 6th 2008 23:19
Yet another film company has decided to try to make a franchise of a good movie. Warner Bros has decided to make a prequel to the film I am Legend.

I must admit I, along with the majority of the world, am a big Harry Potter fan. I own all the books and films on DVD. I am constantly looking forward to the release of the next film and thoroughly enjoy internet videos of interviews with the cast and author of the Harry Potter universe.

Surely, I am not the first to think that the delay of the movie release of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is utter crap. I could care less that Warner Bros wants to insure they have a blockbuster in the summer of 2009, which is the reason they gave for the delay from its original November 2008 release date. The Writers Guild of America strike causing other films releases to be delayed is also no excuse. The film is finished but instead of taking the huge blockbuster in the fall of 2008, a year that has apparently been good enough to Warner Bros; they would rather wait until 8 months later to release a guaranteed hit. While that makes good sense from the aspect of being a multi-billion dollar company it bites the big one if you are a fan.

Many would say It's a Wonderful Life is the definitive Christmas movie. I think that's utter nonsense. This will surely spark some backlash in the film lover's community but I stand by what I say. It's a Wonderful Life is almost entirely depressing except for the very tail end of the movie. Now, I cannot dispute that the actors are of the highest caliber and the writing was excellent as well. I simply prefer movies that don't make me feel like gashing a vein. The uplifting end to an otherwise painful and dreary tale doesn't make up for gloom and doom of the rest of the film.

Hancock - A Different Kind of Superhero

December 5th 2008 16:51
Hancock

Columbia Pictures superhero film Hancock was released this week on DVD and Blu-ray. Starring Will Smith, Hancock presents a different type of superhero than we are used to seeing on film. I find it a great improvement over other mega action superhero flicks.

I wonder what other creatures they have? I was once a big WOW player and I think it would be hilarious to go as one of the races from the game next year.

Yeah same with me but apparently there are a lot of people who do. I guess once the presents are opened and they get bored and since everything else in the world is closed then it's movie theater time.
