ANGELS AND DEMONS, THE DA VINCI CODE’S SEQUEL
November 15th 2008 22:23
The Da Vinci Code, one of the most controversial movies, didn't receive good reviews from critics, was banned in many countries such as India and the Philippines, had protestors marching in front of theaters and angered many Christian leaders who asked their followers to boycott the movie. But that didn't stop it from earning $224 million worldwide on its opening weekend and become the highest grossing movie of 2006 with $750 million.
The movie is based on the best selling novel, The Da Vinci Code, written by Dan Brown – he sold the movie rights at $6,000,000 – was directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, How The Grinch Stole Christmas) and written by Akiva Goldsman (I, Robot, Cinderella Man). It stars Tom Hanks as Dr. Robert Langdon and Audrey Tautou as Agent Sophie Neveu. In short, the story states that Jesus Christ – I'm talking about the son of God, the one who died on the cross then resurrected three days later, just in case you were wondering - was married to Mary Magdalene - the former prostitute - and that they had a child together and that Sophie Neveu is the last descent from that union. This means that the Holy Grail is not a chalice but Jesus and Mary Magdalene's bloodline. That's enough to stir up Christians and churches around the world. Don't you think? Certain countries requested that Sony puts a disclaimer at the beginning stating that the story was fiction but they declined.
Two years later, the heat has quite reduce as people have moved on and are more into movies such as Quantum Of Solace, Eagle Eyes, High School Musical 3 and Madagascar 2. But not for long; get ready for The Da Vinci Code's sequel: Angels And Demons, scheduled to be released on May 19th 2009. "It tells the story of Langdon's' brush with a shadowy secret society, the Illuminati, and his frantic quest for the worlds most powerful energy source, in the company of a beautiful Italian physicist whose father, a brilliant physicist, has been murdered."
The movie, also based on a book with similar title written by Dan Brown, was directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman. Tom Hanks comes back as Dr. Robert Langdon. He is joined by Ayelet Zurer as Victoria Vetra and Ewan McGregor as Carlo Ventresca. And no, Sophie Neveu doesn't come back. Too bad, I wonder if she figured out how to turn water to wine or walk on it.
Normally, the book Angels And Demons (2000) was published before The Da Vinci Code (2003), but Ron Howard decided to make it as a sequel rather than a prequel.
Even tough the movie is still half a year from theaters, it will definitely create as much controversies as its predecessor. The Vatican refused to give Ron Howard access to Santa Maria del Popolo and Santa Maria della Vittoria for the filming. According to TheTelegraph.co.uk Father Marco Fibbi, a spokesman, stated "Usually we read the script but in this case it wasn't necessary. Just the name Dan Brown was enough." – Isn't forgiveness one of Christianity's pillars? - The churches had to be recreated in soundstages.

You ask:
Isn't forgiveness one of Christianity's pillars?
The Catholic Church forgives heretics if they recant their heresies. They even forgive blasphemy.
But it's a detailed subject. You'd have to study up on the Sacrament of Penance, and read volumes on moral theology to fully understand the matter.
Over and above that you'd have to read up on the crisis in the Catholic Church, Vatican II, the third secret of Fatima, etc, and work out whether you were on the side of tradition or modernism, and then probably read the Catechism of the Council of Trent, the modern catechism, a few papal encyclicals, various lives of Mary Magdalene and Martha and Lazarus, various lives of Christ.
There are other considerations regarding filming in a Catholic chapel where the Most Blessed Sacrament is reserved. But that would mean reading even more material. The Summa Theologica of St Thomas Aquinas, The Dignities and the Duties of the Priesthood by St Alphonsus de Ligouri, etc, etc, etc.
Then to get a balanced view, The Satanic Bible of Anton LeVay, the Koran, the book of Mormon. Hell buy a Donny Osmond album to have some elevator music playing in background while you read.
Or you could just imply that the Catholic Church doesn't forgive people because they refused a Hollywood movie production company permission to film in two of their chapels. And then write a book about syllogisms.

The reason why I said "Isn't forgiveness one of Christianity's pillars? " is because I tough that it was funny that just at the mention of the name Dan Brown they refused to give them access to the locations. If they are already familiar with the story I would understand. But without even knowing the story they said NO, then they definetlly still have it bad for Dan Brown.
If I offended you, I apologize.

No problems. You didn't offend me at all.
Your post interested me, so I posted a comment.
And I think it's just as ludicrous as you do. What did the location manager write?
"Dear Pope Benedict XVI,
We are a film production company. We think everything you teach is rubbish. We're making a film about it. Can we use your chapels to film in?"

Of course I read this one before The Da Vinci Code and may I say (probably because I had already read Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Laurence Gardener), I found it better than the Da Vinci Code too, not quite so religious, so I am surprised at the Vaticans refusal (like ostriches in the sand) they may have missed something actually pro-them?
Teh story is classic (from my point of view) : They're trying to elect a new pope, the vatican is sealed, as they do ... and some fanatic is killing the candidates all under the guise of the Illuminati? Gosh, right there you have the best story ever, I dont see anythign derogatory in it towards Catholicism per se. I actually remember thinking it made them look good actually.
This will be beautiful against the backdrop of an almost perfect historical Rome and all its churches. So many people dont like what the Vativan stands for, I remember thinking it could be anyone!
A regular who dunnit that keeps you on the edge of your seat, right until the last page!
Oh Gosh, be still my beating heart, I cant wait to see it on film, thanks for the heads up!

Now I can't wait to watch the movie. But if I feel too impatient, I'll just buy the book.
Have you read THE DA VINCI CODE?
If yes, which one is better? The book or the movie?

I am curious to see if Angels and Demons will be the same?
