Reduce Your Fuel costs to below $0.20 per Liter.


Sound impossible? It's NOT

Prices at the pump have been steadily increasing since late June - so much so, that the Australian petrol industry watchdogs have been busying themselves making sure everyone is staying honest - or as honest as politicians and large wealthy oil companies are able to stay?

The net result is 'genuine' market increases by the oil companies - and 40% increases at the pumps for the average consumer.

I am not here to bag the Government. I'm not even going to take a stab at the oil companies, the Middle East, George Bush and his US foreign policy or the market price of a barrel of crude oil - but what I will share, is an enviromentally friendly, inexpensive and fun way to manufacture bio-fuel, useable in all modern, fuel injected engines. Cost? - $0.20 / Liter.

Myths & Monikers

Firstly, Bio-Fuel can be manufactured by a fifth grader - it's that simple. So, assuming you are 'Smarter Than A Fifth Grader' you should have no problems understanding either the science or the economics of making your own fuel.

Bio-Fuel is a cheap, 'green' alternative to fuel needs that does not contribute to greenhouse gasses that deplete the ozone layer. It is also a far better fuel for your engine and will reduce wear and maintenance costs.

Bio-Fuel can be manufactured to suit either diesel or petrol version engines.

Bio-Fuel is not volitile and has a lower flashpoint than it's petroleum counterpart - so it isn't dangerous to store.

Bio-Fuel burns clean, with more power and better performance. Some F1 teams have recently made the switch to pure Ethanol [Bio-Fuel] to run in their high performance engines.

You can manufacture enough fuel for the average two car family to run for a week - on the equivalent of a 10kg bag of potatoes - here's how!

Bio-Fuel - or Ethanol as it is properly referred to is created in a two step process. The easiest way to produce ethanol is by adding a specified amount of 'tap water', 'glucose [sugar]' and yeast, converting the complex sugar molecules to alcohol.

Yeast is a naturally occuring product and has the ability to convert simple and complex sugars into alcohol. When done in the proper quantities you are able to yield 20% - 23% Ethanol by volume over a period of 5 days through a natural fermantation process.

Once the Ethanol has been manufactured and sits in solution with the water - you need a way to separate the two liquids in order to be able to use the Ethanol to power your equipment.

Water turns from a liquid to a gas [steam] at 100c. Ethanol turns from it's liquid state to Ethanol vapour at between 78c - 83c. Alcohol in a water solution also significantly lowers the boiling point of water where it will boil at about 78c. As the Ethanol boils off the temperature required to keep the solution boiling rises. The Ethanol is emulsified in the water and can be boiled off and re-collected through the process of distillation.

If you have ever boiled your coffee pot and held a cold plate just above the vapour - what happens? It condenses on the underside of the plate and tiny droplets of water form and run down the side. This is exactly the process required to collect Ethanol from a water based solution.

Once the Ethanol has been collected its purity is between 80% and 95% and an octane rating higher than most premium petroleum products and may be used in your vehicle without further processing. A 44 gal. [205 Liter] drum will yield approximately 55 Liters of fuel in about 2 hours - or approximately 110 - 1 Liter bottles of purified, 40% [by volume] potable alcohol after being cut with distilled or purified water [Chlorine in tap water will cause the clear alcohol liquid to take on a milky essence].

Before I go any further - I will tell you that Ethanol production in all States of Australia is considered illegal - here's why.

If you look at the letter of the law - it is outright illegal - but like most things illegal, there seems to be 'degrees' of legality and perhaps some indication by enforcement agencies to turn a blind eye. After all you are simply recycling carbon based organic matter, letting a naturally occuring product known as yeast convert starches into sugars and sugars into Ethanol and all the while doing your part for the environment right?

Well... because you are able to manufacture potable alcohol via the same process - that's where it all goes pear shaped.

If you simply manufactured Bio-Fuel for your own personal use to power your vehicles, lawn mowers and weed whackers, I honestly believe that nobody would give a stuff. If you were arrested and had your day in court - it would be highly unlikely under those circumstances that you would ever face prosecution?

If on the other hand you got bored of making your own fuel and ventured into potable alcohol production for instance and saw it as an excellent source of income, with visions of giving Johnny Walker and the folks at Bundaberg Rum a run for their money - while at the same time cheating the ATO out of their hefty bit of tax...I can assure you that they would take a dim view of that and you would likely go to jail [where inmates incidentally distill their own alcohol using the same method, albeit not quite as sophisticated equipment].

Fortunately, it is a topic on everyone's tongues these days and as petrol prices continue to soar - any pricing relief at the pumps [while doing our bit for the environment] is well received.

It is not a crime to know the truth about Ethanol and it's benefits to both your wallet and your vehicle. It is not morally irresponsible to recycle waste organic matter in the production of Ethanol - and it certainly isn't illegal to own either the technology or the equipment to manufacture your very own Bio-Fuel.

Marmalade Glazed Ham

Marmalade Glazed Ham


This is a great festive ham - but don't wait for a special occasion for this recipe.

Ingredients:

1 - Smoked Ham Leg
1 - Bouquet Garnis - with;
1 carrot
1 leek
1 bunch fresh coriander
1 bunch fresh basil
1 bay leaf
1 - Peel from two oranges

Directions:

Insert leg ham into large stock pot with bouquet garnis and fill. Bring slowly to the boil and continue boiling gently for the next 1.5 hours. Allow to cool slightly and remove ham from the stock. Save the stock for soup base at a later date. Place the ham on a cutting board and remove the rind [ that will now feel like rubber ] Cut rind with a knife and insert a sharp knife below the skin - allowing about 1cm of pork fat to remain. Once rind has been removed - cut fat in a diamond pattern across the leg and place in a roasting pan at 275c for about twenty minutes or until fat renders and begins to become crisp. Meanwhile in a saucepan, add your favourite marmalade, fresh rosemary and enough water to thin and bring on heat gently - stirring until thickened. After the twenty minutes remove ham - reduce heat to 160c and glaze ham with the marmalade mixture. Leave for a few minutes allowing the glaze to gel on the meats surface. Repeat and return to oven for about 20 minutes per kilo or about 1 hour for the average leg ham. Reglaze ham often. When ham is cooked, remove from oven and let rest - apply a final glaze. Serve hot or cold. Delicious!!!

Thai Glass Noodle Salad

Thai Glass Noodle Salad


1 – carrot
1 – zucchini
1 – Small head of broccoli
2 – Spring onions
1 - cloves of garlic crushed
1 – handful, fresh chopped coriander
75g roasted red capsicum [sweet pepper]
25ml rice oil
100g package of vermicelli rice [glass] noodles
Equal Amounts of:
Thai fish sauce
Water
Lime-juice
Grated palm sugar
Sea salt

2 – Tbsp roasted sesame seeds
1 – dried jalapeno pepper thinly sliced
Cracked pepper to taste

Directions;

Grate both carrot and zucchini into a bowl. Finely chop head of broccoli and add to bowl. Char grill red capsicum over open flame until black. Rest in a zip-lock plastic bag. Peel loose skin once cool and slice finely adding to bowl. Chop fresh coriander and add to mixture stirring through. Add chopped glass noodles.

In a separate bowl, add equal amounts of Thai fish sauce, water, grated palm sugar, lime juice and sea salt. Dissolve both salt and palm sugar in the liquid. Add roasted sesame seeds, thinly sliced dried chili and cracked pepper to taste. Slowly add rice oil and emulsify mixture. Taste and adjust if necessary, it should be a balanced taste of sweet, sour, hot and bitter. Pour liquid over grated vegetable and noodle mixture and stir through – serve cold.

Hi Nina -

Thanks for that...

As you read through the series a bit further, the main character Andy [ironically] works on a demanding schedule with uncertain travel itineraries.

As such, he finds it difficult to manage a traditional romantic relationship and grows weary of the ever present opportunistic relationships backstage.

He resorts to internet dating and meets an Australian CG, who becomes his online love interest. The twist, is that CG is the daughter of a famous rock drummer and one of Andy' former clients.

Since CG isn't completely aware of what Andy does for a living - they never put two and two together and make the connection?

nearly 6 years ago now - I moved to Australia and married CG.

Having said that, I think the series could be produced here or produced there - the only obvious difference in budgets I suppose?
