Atom, which is the latest microprocessor of Intel is expected to turn up in several Apple products.This chip includes support for multiple threads, measures less than 25 sq mm, making it intel's smallest microprocessor.Silverthorne chips sport a thermal design power (TDP) specification in 0.6-2.5 watt range and scale to 1.8GHz speeds depending on customer need. By comparison, today's mainstream mobile Core 2 Duo processors have a TDP in the 35-watt range.
"This microprocessor is made using the world's smallest transistors" said Intel Executive Vice President Sean Maloney.
Mobile phone sales has surpassed 1.15 billion units in the year 2007, which is a 16 percent increase with 2006, when only 990 million units were sold. Gartner, Inc, an information and technology research and advisory firm headquartered in Stamford announced their studies on the sales on mobile phone in the year 2007.
According to the company there are 2 types of markets namely emerging and mature markets. In the emerging markets like India and China, there was a tremendous growth as more and more people bought their first mobile.In mature markets, such as Japan and Western Europe, consumers' appetite for feature-laden phones was met with new models packed with TV tuners, global positioning satellite (GPS) functions, touch screens and high-resolution cameras."
The position of the mobile vendors in the market is as follows
1. Nokia - They were able to sell 435,453 million phones.
2.Motorola- Motorola gained the second spot with only 164,037 million.
3.Samsung- The South Korean company just behind motorola with 154,549 million units sold.
4.Sony Ericsson- They also had a positive performance.
5.LG mobile makers.
In the emerging markets, nokia 1110,1600 and 2630 gained popularity, where as in the mature markets N95,N82,N73 were sought.
In the later phase of 2007, some other companies like Research In Motion (RIM), ZTE and Apple joined the rat race. It is said that Apple's i-phone is going to rule the roast in the years to come.
IBM, one of the companies with a great history has announced the launch of its new z10 mainframe, which will dramatically increase data center efficiency and improve performance by 100% while reducing power requirements and floor space. IBM has spend 5 years and 1.5 billion dollars to develop z10 and this mainframe is nearly equivalent to 1500 distributed servers, with upto 85 percent smaller footprint and 85 percent lower energy costs.It can consolidate x86 software licenses at up to a 30-to-1 ratio.
Also, it is 50 percent faster, it delivers up to 100 percent better performance for CPU-intensive jobs, and it provides 70 percent more capacity than its z9 predecessor. This is designed to help businesses reduce inefficiency and complexity of today's data centers.
Despite the competition with Sun, HP and Dell, IBM remains the dominant mainframe maker, winning about 80 percent of sales in the past two years, according to Gartner.
Intel, the world's largest chip maker introduces its "atom" brand microprocessors. Two versions are about to come up sometime in this quarter, namely what is preciously known as Silverthrone and Diamondville. These microprocessors are designed for Mobile Internet Devices(MIDs).
