An awkward moment

Ever had one of those awkward moments, where there seems to be a long stretch of silence and you don't know what to do about it?
Well here is one I've had that was quite memorable.
I'm sitting the car passenger seat and I'm being driven to meet someone. In the driver’s seat is Mitch (Not real name). There is an awkward silence filling the car and neither of us knew what to do about it. I decide to put a stop to it. I struggle to think of the first thing that comes into my head. What's the first thing I think of? Well it's an article in the local paper. The article describes the angst of local residents in Croydon (Where I am currently being driven to). In it they are frustrated by the local gay men, using the public toilets as a pick up spot. So, I began telling Mitch all about it. Don't ask me why, it was the only thing I could think of at the time. So here I am telling him this story and talking about how we are going to meet someone at Croydon and then go to clean up a friend’s garden. We get to Croydon and I get dropped off. Just before I walk away, I thank Mitch for the lift.
"Yeah thanks for the lift, I'll probably go to the public toilet first and then wait for Omar to come pick me up"
The realisation of what I said only sinks in when I come back from the toilet.
