To Premium, or not to Premium?

November 15th 2009 06:55
Air travel was so simple before - we had just the major airlines, we didn't have to choose if we wanted food, comfort kits and what to add for them, we didn't have to pay for exit row seats and we had 3 seating plans to choose from - First, Business or cattle class.

Now with competition increasing in the industry and everyone wants to stand out that little bit more so they'll get noticed - this first came in the form of adding a different class onto the plane so make those feel more special - and with this - PREMIUM ECONOMY was born.

Qantas, British Airways, SAS Skandinavian, V Australia, Virgin/Pacific Blue and a few other airlines are now offering this seating plan. Passengers can pay a little (well, ok, a lot - sometimes double) more to have just that slightly larger seat width, slightly more leg room and to be offered proper wines (out of the bottle, not the box!) and a little bit better food (alas, airline food is no longer 'all the same') - but at double, triple or more the price, is it really worth it?

Lately there has been more demand for those looking for that extra comfort but don't want to pay business fares. An economy class airfare to London, if bought at the right time flying the right airline, can cost only around $1300 including taxes. Premium economy, due to not all airlines offering this service, a Qantas seat for example, can cost around $5000 per person, and SAS Skandinavian, flying half economy to Asia and only from there, get the premuim service on their SAS's own flights (and vice versa on the way back) is around $4500.

You know what? If you are lucky, you can grab one of those business class specials with Asiana Airlines for just $6000 - WHY pay the same for an inferior service?

I don't know about you - if I really wanted to fork out the money, I'd look for the special business class airfare and have a significantly more comfortable journey than try to just have a little bit better service for a lot more cost. (First class is, and will always be out of reach for me I think) - Premium is just not worth it.

What do you think?

Virgin Blue's premium economy
This is Virgin's premium economy seats - really just the same seats with the middle seat made into a 'space' - how is that premuim?

Qantas premium economy
This is Qantas' premium offering - ok this marketing photo actually makes it look nice - has anyone ever travelled on them? Any good?

Thai's premium economy
Thai's premium economy seating - besides the 2-2-2 configuration I really can't tell the difference otherwise

Finally, an interview

November 15th 2009 06:09
It has been a long journey - I have been applying for jobs for at least 2 months now, on an average of 3 applications a day. There has been nothing. Mostly rejection emails saying that "there has been a significant number of suitable applicants, and although we are impressed with your experience we have found someone more suitable" type things, and sometimes not even a reply.

While going through my resume with a friend of mine, we realised that in times like today where jobs are scarce and more and more people are out there looking, employers simply take one look at my resume, see my current employement 'Flight Centre - Travel Consultant' - laugh to themselves and cast aside, without even looking further down the line to see my real IT experiences.

And finally, on Friday I get a call from a small boutique IT consultancy for a chat, and an interview has been scheduled for Monday at 8am.

Although this does not mean I have a new job yet, but it's that little bit of hope I have been looking for. At least I know, there ARE something out there, and there are people out there who are willing to read beyond the first lines.

Wish me luck

I got a call!

October 29th 2009 10:28
I've been really actively job searching lately. I've applied for absolutely everything I think I can do to get back into IT, and after many rejection emails, I've finally got a call.

This was from a recruitment company hiring on behalf of the actual organisation. Asked all the standard questions, and enquired about the move from IT to Travel and whether I am confident to be able to do the job again.

One concern he had for me, is that his client will be looking at my resume, and notice that I have been out of the field for 1.5 years and possibly out of touch making me less appealing as a candidate as the others who are still currently in the same industry.

However, he is going to try and put me forward for an interview with the hiring manager, then it's up to me to make an impression.

To be honest I am extremely nervous. It has indeed been a year and a half since I have been in a corporate environment, and while travel agency is still a "Professional" job - I use completely different manners and language to my colleagues and clients than in corporate.

Will get another call tomorrow to arrange the interview.
Update you soon.

Are early bird deals worth your while?

October 24th 2009 06:17
Thought I'd just have a shameless moment - Flight Centre Ltd's Sydney Travel Expo is on this weekend at the Convention Centre in Darling Harbour. If you are around, drop by to say hi I'll be sitting at the Eastwood desk. (Even better if you are there to book something, give me a hand with my final months at the company )

Anyways, whether you go through a travel agent or go through online channels, you'll notice that early bird deals are starting to appear in every form of advertisements

To cruise, or not to cruise

October 16th 2009 07:57
There is a saying. Once you've cruised, you'll cruise again.

It certainly is addictive, apparently. Not that I know, I've never cruised. Many people like me who has not cruised (we are talking about real cruising, not the ferry cross town) would say that cruising is not their thing, that they "simply cannot imagine being stuck on a ship for more than a day

Job Search in Full Swing

October 12th 2009 10:45
Although the news have been saying that the job market really isn't going too great at the moment, there really has been a lot more vacancies on the online search engins than say... 3 months ago.

My own job search in now in full swing, as I have made the final decision to end my travel agent career as soon as possible. In the past hour I have applied for 5 jobs that were posted only today, so the prospect is looking good

Vegetarian Heaven? Come to Berrima

October 11th 2009 10:55
Sorry Jason. I can't help it I had to share this place with everyone.

This little restaurant is about 1.5 hours drive south of Sydney in the town of Berrima - The Zen Oasis vegetarian restaurant - hidden away in a small block of land with its beautifully manicured gardens and pond and beautifully cooked vegetarian buffet

Historic Berrima - NSW

October 11th 2009 10:34
Thought I'd share this little gem in the Southern Highlands of NSW.

Berrima, just a bit further south from Mittagong of the Southern Highlands, is a cute little historic town. One main road, 400 people. Plenty to enjoy

I do hope that is not LARD icing!
In German there is actually a thing called meatcake as translated from 'Fleischkuechen' -- it's like meat loaf and is actually really nice! Without the icing of course, served with gravy and salad.

I tried to ban everyone from coming by choosing an overseas destination - but they still want to come
I guess those who are coming really do care about us - that's one thing I can be sure coz I can't imagine anyone spending $2k to go somewhere just to get free food!

Hi K

Thanks for dropping by! I know the Temple at Woollongong, and I would have to say it's actually better because not only do they have great food, the environment is also great. Not that the temple isn't also serene and calm, but this place would be more for nature and country lovers.

Definitely do stop by on your way down south!

LOL being in the travel industry I actually find this funny
