Anoop Desai brings “Caught Up” by Usher to a new level as he sings with just a drum line and back-up singers. Some of the judges said he should have chosen a different song, but others said they were glad he brought the fun back. Simon, of course, thought it was “a complete and utter mess.”
Megan Joy sings “Turn Your Lights Down Low” by Bob Marley. Her unique voice is consistent but doesn’t have much range to it. The judges said they think she’s in trouble with that song choice. They said she needs to take the judges by surprise and that the song was boring.
Danny Gokey decides to sing Rascal Flatt’s “What Hurts the Most.” He really has the emotion to back this song up, and it sounds great. The range he displays is extensive and very expressive. The judges said it sounded fantastic, his best performance so far.
Allison Iraheta does “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt. This song is full of emotion and she tries to play that up, but she can’t quite reach that point. The song just falls short. The judges said it felt forced- a good performance but not great.
Scott MacIntyre sings Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are.” It’s just him and the piano, and the results soulful and sweet. Scott knows how to put the emotion into the song, and he plays it up a little bit with a couple of rifts to show off his range. The judges called it an honest and moving performance.
Matt Giraud sings the Fray’s “You Found Me.” The song suits his range but the emotion sounds a little forced. Playing the keyboard as he sings seems to suit him well. The judges said he was trying to sound too much like the original artist and that it just wasn’t a great performance.
Lil Rounds sang Celine Dion’s “I Surrender” and sounds amazing. This woman can sing absolutely anything. The judges said she showed some unbelievable vocal skills, but the song choice was a bit surprising. The judges were “wowed.”
Adam Lambert goes for the Wild Cherries’ “Play that Funky Music.” He definitely gets down and funky, as well as a bit over-the-top with his theatrics. The judges said he “worked it out” and was “in the star zone.”
Kris Allen wraps up the night with “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Morrissey on the piano. He really amps up the song with his emotional lyrics, and then he mellows things back out to end the song. The overall effect is fantastic. The judges say it was very creative and one of the best performances of the night.
Overall the performances tonight were really good. If I had to predict who gets voted off tomorrow night, I’d guess either Megan Joy or Matt Giraud. That’s just personal opinion. I guess we will see!
