Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life

All the Leaves are Brown: Songs about Autumn

October 19th 2007 03:06
Well Autumn weather is finally coming to Texas. Temperatures are finally dipping, the leaves aren't changing yet. The seasons move forward in the song as we meander through to winter. It's the imagery of a very leafy and cold fall that stays in listeners' minds after hearing these songs. I look forward to brown, orange, and yellow leaves blowing across the roads.

Here are some of my favorites
The White Stripes - 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground'
Carbon Leaf - 'Grey Sky Eyes'
Earth Wind and Fire - 'September'
Simon and Garfunkel - 'Scarborough Fair'
Elliott Smith - 'Amanda Cecelia'
The Kinks - 'Autumn Almanac'
Aphex Twin - 'Autumn Acid'
U2 - 'October'
The Moody Blues - 'Forever Autumn't be psych
The Mamas and the Papas - 'California Dreamin''

'Autumn Leaves' is all I can add...besides we're in Spring going on Summer mode here!

I love the colours of Autumn!

In North Central Texas we hav maybe 3 weeks of "fall weather" and one month of "winter" weather. If we are lucky we have a month of spring but mostly it is "summery" weather. I hope spring and summer keep spirits bright!

Weather's warming up nicely - here in beautiful downtown Sydney - that said I'm afraid Autumn comes in third just behind summer and spring in my books - though the colours of the season are enormous and always a pleasure to take in.

You've pretty well exhausted my list - though how about The Byrds and Turn, Turn, Turn - not strictly about autumn - but as they say - There is a season - turn, turn turn . . .

There was also a little ditty in the mid-70's - called Seasons in the Sun - bit of a tear jerker. Thin bow - but hey . . .

Nice post.

Hiya Mis

Yep it`s getting to summer here too - even after being here nearly 5 years I am still not used to this humid weather.... WHEW!

Autumn songs.... hhhmmmm....

Placebo - Summers Gone
Blue - When Summer's Gone

And my mother used to sing a song to me when I was young but I don`t know what it`s called - 'The leaves are falling, summers gone. The winter`s coming and I gotta move on. Her face was lovely, skin so fair....'

Autumn must be great around your part of the world. Standing in a shower of different coloured leaves....

I was born in the winter so maybe the colder weather suits me......

Oh I couldn't agree with you more!

Turn Turn Turn and Seasons in the Sun are great additions! .

Good to see you!

Random comment (I'm sure it's been said before, and I'm sure it'll be said again) -- your tastes are ridiculously catholic, Ms W. For instance, the above list alone extends over four decades (more, if you want to trace back how old Scarborough Fair is) and over many styles. What a varied range, what a repertoire.

Perhaps you could write, one of these days, about how a normal week for you goes as far as encountering music is concerned. Where do you hear music (radio at work, radio in the car, CD at home, iPod on the train), where do you hear new music, how much do you download or purchase, etc.? How do you manage to keep up with it all? Where do you find the time?

You know David "formerly of MO" has said that about me before and that is funny b/c I am SO not Catholic but Freud might call bullshit on that :0). Will have to give that another think through!

Thanks for the idea regarding a future post. I would be happy to do that. Currently, I am trying to finsih a post about surf rock (on the suggestion of Mr. Nice Guy.) But I will get to it post haste! Hope your weekend was a great one!

Darn--since you said California Dreamin'--what is that GREAT song on (I think) the latest Greenday CD--When September Comes. I think that's it. Really reminds me of their earlier "Time of Your Life."
