The Parent Trap

April 14th 2008 09:27
You may or may not have read my article 'Barry Boxing Hall of Shame'. In it I condemned the actions of Barry Hall and called for his deregistration.
So...the content of this article may suprise.

Today, I heard about Brent Staker's parents publicly admonishing Barry Hall in relation to his actions on Saturday night.

I will not stand for parents interfering in sports at any level...but especially at the elite level that the AFL supposedly is.

Is Brent Staker playing for the West Coast Eagles in the AFL or is he playing for the West Perth U9's?

It is for this exaxt reason - interfering parents - that the game of Australian Rules Football is becoming more and more like netball every year.

While what Barry Hall did has no place in our game...the comments of Brent Staker's parents again bring into the spotlight the fact that Andrew Demetriou seems hell bent on cleaning up the image of the game to the point where heavy contact seems to be resigned to black and white archive footage.

And it is not to please the men or the boys who play football - but the mothers of the young boys who have to choose between the comparatively 'safe' basketball and the 'bloodthirsty' football for their sons.

Mothers hate blood. They hate the blood of their sons being spilled more.

Yet what mothers fail to see is that Australian Rules Football has always been a man's game that is played by men.

Australians are meant to have been bred tough.

We have traditionally been proud of the contact aspect of the sport.
And yet while no one would doubt that the AFL is a strong and healthy competition I can't help but feel that we are strong not because of a healthy love for the sport...but the sport having to make compromises to secure the love of a safety conscious public.

Mothers are great at many things - but leave them out of decisions regarding the safety of their sons on the sports field. Blood is meant to be splilled; bones meant to be broken; consciousness meant to be lost. Men understand this...woman do not.

Brent Staker understands this...he has ruled out legal action in relation to the incident on Saturday night.

But...he needs to remind his parents that he is a grown man and that he is playing a man's game.

I for one...will encourage my boys to play Australian Rules Football in the spirit of the game of yesteryear...with aggression at both man and ball.

R.I.P Australian Rules Football
Died 14/04/08
Fought long and hard against the rare and deadly cancer Demetriou.
Gave up after comments made by the parents of Brent Staker.

Barry Boxing Hall of Shame

April 13th 2008 09:12
Barry Hall should be deregistered by the AFL.

I love the tough stuff.
I lament that AFL Football is becoming more and more like netball.
But...there is no place for what Barry Hall did either in our game...or in society.

If Brent Staker had shaped up to Barry Hall and had been punched in that manner...I would have no issue with it. Certainly Barry Hall would be suspended...but I would not be calling for his deregistration.

The fact of the matter is that Brent Staker was not in a position to defend himself because he had not shaped up to Barry Hall...was not being overtly aggressive...indeed, was not even looking at Barry Hall when he was floored.

Not only this...floored by a punch from a former boxer who knew exactly where to punch to gain maximum effect.

I understand that Barry Hall has apologised for the incident.
I only hope that the AFL see the apology for what it really is.
A legal tactic employed by the Sydney Football Club in the hope that it will have the effect of lessening the severity of the suspension that Barry Hall will recieve.

Barry Hall has suggested that he might like to return to boxing after his football days are over.
I hope that the AFL ends his career prematurely and sends a message not only to AFL players but to society in general, that unnecessary violence is not the solution to your problems.
Deregister Barry Hall...not to make an example of him...but to punish him for a crime that he committed in the full knowledge of the effect that it would have.

I wish you well in your boxing career Barry but even boxing has rules and you throughout your career have shown a blatant disregard for them.

Goodbye Barry...don't let the door of the AFL Tribunal hit you on the way out.

Why is Tiger Lost in the Jungle?

April 13th 2008 08:58
Tiger Woods WILL NOT win the US Masters.
That much would seem to be apparent, the only question that remains now...is why.
You might answer...well Tiger was playing in a field totalling more than 100 competitors...he cannot possibly win them all etc. etc.
But...I believe that there is a much more sinister reason that Tiger has underperformed at this years US Masters.
Pressure.
All of us succumb to it...only Tiger... has often seemed oblivious to pressure.
What makes this time different you ask?
The fact that Tiger saw fit to declare that the 'Grand Slam' was on his mind.

The problem with this is two-fold.
Firstly, it says that his mind is not on the job at hand.
But not only that...it puts greater pressure on you to perform if you declare yourself to be a certainty.

You cannot win all the time. Roger Federer is in a similar position to Tiger Woods in that he is chasing down the record number of 'Majors' won. At the moment Roger Federer is experiencing a form drought. Or is he? Is Tiger?
OR
Is it disrespectful to the other players in a given sport to attribute a champion not winning to a form slump?
Why can't a younger generation of players not outplay the champion...why are we as a sport loving public loathe to applaud those on the rise?

At the moment Tiger Woods is -5...he is in the top 5...and he has outplayed the majority of the field...true he is not playing at his absolute best...but the young guns at the front of the field are playing out of their skin.
And Tiger is feeling the strain.

Federer has often spoken of how he feels as though 'Raffa' is breathing down his neck...and now the two of them - both without a title on tour this year...are in turn being hunted by Novak Djokovic.

The hunters become the hunted.

I am not suggesting that Tiger is past it and that he will never win again..
Only that there are many other great players on tour and that to say that a
'Grand Slam' is on your mind is not taking this into consideration.

Winning a single 'Major' is tough Tiger...you of all people should know this...don't make it any harder on yourself by declaring you will win all four in a year.

Colling Would Win But For...

April 13th 2008 08:40
I am a loyal and therefore long suffering Collingwood supporter. After watching Collingwood play what might loosely be called football I feel compelled to put pen to paper, or more accurately, fingers to keyboard and express my opinion at to why Colling Would win the premiership but for...

It is widely acknowledged that Australia has produced some outstanding golfers.
However, in the 74 year history of the US Masters no Australian has yet claimed the green jacket.
