Aliens are among us: the strange things people think and do

April 9th 2010 07:29
Have you noticed that your neighbor often behaves a little - well - strange? Do you have a work colleague who is just a little too odd for comfort? Have you caught one of your friends doing something that strikes you as being just a little odd?

Have you ever considered that they might be an alien?

If you said yes you're probably one of the 22 per cent of people around the world who believe aliens - the ones from space - are here and living among us.

That rather startling result comes from a new survey of 22,000 people from around the world. Almost a quarter of people questioned are convinced that extraterrestrials are living as humans right here on Earth.

The number is even higher in China, where 40 per cent of people think someone they know is probably an alien.

If you think that's odd, you obviously haven't met the guy who sells counterfeit software at my local computer market.

I'm a big fan of weird surveys. They help me feel normal in an increasingly abnormal world. Just when I start to think I might be losing my grip on reality, along comes a survey that reassures me that I really am no more loopy than anyone else.

A few weeks ago a survey in Britain took the covers off the UK's most annoying sleeping habits.

As you'd expect snoring, tooth-grinding and fidgeting are all in the top ten. At number two is the "Midnight Shuffle" , where one person moves away from their sleep mate only to be followed across the bed by their partner.

The title of Most Annoying Bed habit went to the "Tuck and Roll", in which partner number 1 grabs the edge of the duvet and then rolls over, leaving their mate in the cold.

A recent survey in the US found only 26 per cent of high school students trust the media. Fair enough, you may say; but the survey also found 46 per cent of those same kids do trust politicians.

The same study found 75 per cent of teenagers actually get along very well with their parents, and would rather spend time with them than playing sport or hanging with their friends.

Still in the US, a magazine survey last year found 69 per cent of Americans believe in God, while 77 per cent pray regularly.

That means 8 per cent of people in the US pray to a God they don't believe exists.

Remember the movie Indecent Proposal, in which Demi Moore's character trashed her marriage by accepting $1million to sleep with a wealthy tycoon(Robert Redford)?

The film sparked would you/wouldn't you debates around the world when it was released back in 1993, but today the argument appears to be settled, if you believe a global survey.

It's found more than 30 per cent of people would sleep with someone other than their partner for $1million.

15 per cent said they'd do it for just $100,000, proving that millionaires have a lot to gain if they know how to haggle.

Then there's the 5 per cent who said they'd sleep with someone for tickets to soccer's World Cup.

Actually, sex surveys are always a little reassuring. Recently one discovered two thirds of Australians regularly participate in spanking or bondage sessions, while nearly a fifth wear their partner's clothing when they're home alone.

Now, if someone would run a survey to find out how many people have slept with aliens, that would really be interesting.
