Apicius...the first Bobby Flay

My next couple posts will be dedicated to the original cookbook De re coquinaria, written by Apicius. Through multiple Latin translations and many burnt, bland and just outright disgusting dishes I have discovered 20 recipes that can be made possible in the modern kitchen. Of course the wombs and bellys that were used in most of the dishes had to be replaced and ostriches are hard to come by in Delaware so those had to be axed also. But overall the Romans knew how to cook and now I realize why most of them were fat and why they made so many excuses to have feasts every night of the week.

Basil Beginnings

September 28th 2011 03:30
Everyone has a spark moment. The moment they realize that they fell in love with something....whether it be a hobby, career, person etc.. My love of food began with the smell of basil. I cannot pin point the moment when I first smelled basil, I am Jewish not Italian so I am sure it did not come at an early age. But that moment when i whiffed that sweet aroma of that italian green flower I knew I was in love with food and the culinary arts.
