2008 Odfjell Armador (Chile)
July 22nd 2010 23:18
So, what kind of Spanish name is Odfjell? The Norwegian kind actually... and what is an Armador?... a shipowner...
As the story goes, over 25 years ago, the pioneering Norwegian Armador, Dan Odfjell discovered and fell in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley, Chile. He bought a vineyard, made wine, many moons later I ran into him.... well his wines actually....
I have a couple of bottles of the previous vintage of this beautiful Carmenere and the wine stop brought in the 2008 and I just had to, well, stop by for a taste or two (or twenty) yesterday.
90 points by Stephen Tanzer's Intl. Wine Cellar... 91 by me, if you consider the price and the the fact that I was 19 other sheets to the wind... more on those at a later time. Right, the Armador...
Deep, dark viole color with an opaque, almost black appearance. The first impression of this Carmenère is one of plums followed by the gradual emergence of blackberries and raspberries, together with liquorice, coffee, black pepper, tobacco and cigar box.
On the palate the wine is elegant, smooth and well structured with refreshing acidity highlighted by long flavors of black fruit and cedary spice. Well balanced and juicy with a long complex finish. Suffice it to say I added to my cellar... My liver loves me...
