kucinich is in danger of joining chomsky and cassandra in the little dead-end corridor of history where humanity files people who keep repeating 'inconvenient truths'.

poor man, he wants to make a living in politics, and he wants to tell the truth. that's a very small niche market, generally occupied by store-front preachers. i suppose he'll end up a professor of history in some cow-college, if he's lucky. should talk to al gore, who appears to have found a '3rd way' in environmental activism.

one thing he won't do, is change the course of the american empire. he's not big enough, mike gravels's on the right path but too old, and the others- aren't trying. they just want to wear the purple.

things wouldn't be so much better. even a president can't change national culture. america has been dealing out death and destruction throughout it's history. the rich have been oppressing the poor. racism and greed are national characteristics.

nixon brought the vietnam genocide to it's full flower, but it was started by democrats who had relatively progressive ideas for domestic policy.

clinton had some good ideas for health care, and was a master of political manipulation, but his health program failed nonetheless- a victim of the national character. gore would be very unlikely to succeed where clinton failed.

stop dreaming, start looking at reality. then you can tell what needs changing.

many people think bush is responsible for the ever more obvious turn toward blatant empire abroad and fascism at home. i think he is just a symptom of the national culture. there has never been any shortage of 'nazi' personalities in american history.

this period of unmatched military power has let these people bloom. the diversion of taxes into bloated military spending has at the same time begun the process of weakening the economic base of that power. so the militarists will have their wealth and power, while ensuring it won't last. shame they will do so much damage while in power, though.

in the meantime, people sneer at bush, but do nothing to change the structure of society which makes his rule possible. if everyone who despises bush joined mike gravel's initiative for democracy, perhaps the military-industrial complex could be brought under control. it's the only chance i can see.

mike gravel's democracy initiative seems like to only way to solve the problem of of crazies, thugs, and merely crooked pollies running the country for the benefit of a few.

doesn't seem to be catching on. the writers of the constitution were not democrats, and had every intention of leaving the country in the hands of the american aristocracy. americans have swallowed that plan ever since.

on Anti-terrorism and restrictions of freedom

good discussion. well, would be, if the other side had anything useful to say. i long ago came to theses 3 simple rules of thumb:

1. anyone who wants more power, shouldn't have any.

2. any nation in fear of terrorism should get their soldiers off other people's land.

3. a nation that is not a democracy, shouldn't export it.

shortly after the twin towers came down, millions of ghosts broke out laughing to hear it "was not the result of american foreign policy." mike gravel's 'initiative for democracy' is the path toward civiliation for america. too bad not many want to walk it.
