Airport Transfers- Essential advice (LINK)

June 4th 2008 23:07
Okay, so when i was travelling on the world trip of a lifetime there were a few things i learnt along the way. One of them was timing.

It is absolutely essential that whoever is booking your flights leaves enough time if you are tranfering directly from one flight to another. Travel Agents told us that is was plenty of time to cross over, however im not sure they had actually spent time in American airports lately.

You need at least 4 hours between when you land and when your next flight is, just to be safe. Not 3 hours because that is cutting it fine. Afterall it is better to be waiting an extra hour to board, then having to reschedule another flight that may be an extra hour or extra day or two. I cannot stress enough that you need plenty of time between flights especially in American airports because they require you go through customs and then check baggage back onto the next flight.

An example of what can go wrong is that we went from Cancun to Miami, and then had 2 hours inbetween our transfers to get on a connecting flight to New York. Well, Miami airport had heaps of flights come in at the same time and we hadn't even made it to the front of the customs line and our flight had already left for NY. We had to wait in Miami airport for the next available flight to NY which was 4 hours, and on top of that it was delayed by 2 hours. So it was a very long day. What should have been a 4 hour flight turned into over 12 hours in airports. Definately a learing curve though. I hope this has been helpful in preventing at least one person from missing their flight. My case was just minor, there were people in Miami airport that had been waiting for another flight for days. They were camping out in the departure lounge and they had their luggage all over the floor. Some were sleeping in their suitcases.

Cheers
