Reading beaten at home

May 4th 2008 07:56

The spurs beat reading by 1 – Nil. Reading's nerves became frayed when Keane put Spurs in front. His goal in the 16th minute drawing him level with Berbatov on 23 for the season. Coppell would have been relieved to see Dimitar Berbatov missing from the Tottenham starting line-up, the Bulgarian having scored six goals against them this season. Berbatov was sidelined with a groin injury, and was replaced by Darren Bent, while Tom Huddlestone replaced Aaron Lennon.

For Reading, Emerse Fae and Ibrahima Sonko were left out of the match-day squad after being suspended by the club for missing a reserve game, as Coppell named an unchanged starting XI.

Reading knew a defeat could put a huge dent in their survival hopes, but Spurs continued to look the likelier scorers. Radek Cerny produced some fine saves to earn a clean sheet in the match.

Spurs, however, still appeared far more threatening an attacking force, with Bent shooting against the inside of the post from just outside the penalty area with 15 minutes remaining.

Spurs are on the 11 position on the English premier league table with 46 points and for reading in the 18 position in the relegation zone with 33 points with 9 wins.

The premier league.com quoted:
"I can't ask any more of them in terms of every game they have played and the effort they have put in. We can play better because results haven't been enough to get us into a position where we hope a club like this could be, but in terms of where we were to where we are I can't complain at all." - Gary Megson
"You know what you are going to get against Bolton and you have to deal with it, we are a passing team but we didn't do that. You're always playing for your future and we reminded the players of that. In the bigger picture we've managed to stay in the Premier League but we need improvement next season." - Roy Keane
