Africa, Asia and Middle East, South America? Australia? And their old Art legacy.

August 27th 2007 08:16

We always talk about classical art and music from the European perspective: Beethoven, Mozart, Modigliani, and Michael Angelo..... But what about the rest of the world?
Classical music seems to means classical European or western as some may say music. What about the Arabic classical music characterized by the luth a specific rhythm, the Chinese classical music? And all the other countries?

I like Degas’s, Van Gogh’s, Modigliani’s and other famous European paintings, I love the impressionists period but on an other hand I am so impressed by the Japanese paintings, their dedication to details is with no equal anywhere.

I will always remember the first real exhibition of Japanese paintings I went to. I couldn’t take off my eyes from the paintings, I almost wanted to touch the paintings to see if the birds flowers and other animals where not really there staring at me.. If you have the occasion to go to Japan or to see Japanese paintings and ceramics don’t hesitate a bit, you will not be disappointed. It was incredible, fantastic; well actually there is no word for me to describe my feelings. What I find a bit sad is that we always learn about the great European composers and artists and we don’t get to know how exciting and great the creations of artists from other countries can be. We should at least see and have a knowledge of how different their art and music is and how they are different.

Have we forgotten how old these cultures are? Did we forget that Africa is the point where all the civilizations come from (if we refer to the anthropologists)? That even if their art and music was not conceptualized and written it’s been there for so long. That they invented the drum beats that we now use in our modern songs? Can’t we remember that when the Europeans in the middle age where in their starvation periods full of obscurantism the Chinese and Arabic cultures were flourishing? Poets, singers, where common there and literature was in its apogee.

Yes I think a lot of people forget or don’t even think about it. And even people who are aware of that sometimes just get caught in the general behavior and if they have to go and see great art work they will probably go to a museum where the usual artists are exposed (by the way I am not talking about modern artists) and won’t necessary go to see the Asian, African or other small exhibition that could probably more instructive since it will open your eyes to a new culture and new perspectives.
