Advice From Strangers

January 12th 2009 10:16
Ever since last week when I went to two Sales and Marketing Interviews I have felt pretty drained. I’m just taking a break from physically going to interviews. I have gotten a lot of advice from random strangers.

This weekend I was in a store mucking around when this guy asked a random question and we struck up a conversation. I thought he was in his 20’s but later on I find out that he’s 30 and married with kids. Believe me I wasn’t there to hit on him I was more curious about his lap top. The conversation was more like, ‘where can get a good deal for those things?’
Let’s call him Calvin; he said that best place is to look online. But to me that’s a terrifying thought I have never bought anything online, I don’t have a credit card and have a distrust of buying anything in the virtual world. I would much rather go into a real store and be able to feel and see the item physically.

Somehow the conversation got into how to get a professional job. This for him was quite ironical because he was just about to find out whether or not he would still have a job in his current employment or become redundant.

He gave me so many tips because I just asked him every question I could think of. Calvin said I should take short courses to get some experience that would make my CV look good for example: how to dress in an interview, perhaps to flirt with the person interviewing me especially if they are male. That suggestion was pretty questionable I don’t think I could ever pull that off.

I have the feeling a lot of this job hunting thing is about who you know and how to use those connection to your advantage. Whether that’s a good thing I don’t know?

I’m just happy that I finally have a focus and a goal and I’m going to go for it. I wish I had known earlier what it was that I wanted. The timing right now to job hunt isn’t the best but I’m optimistic of my chances.

I have a deadline for myself and that is I need to have a career type job before my next birthday and also to have some decent savings in the bank. Then go for a trip to New York in a few years when the dollar is more stable. I have so many new objectives and challenges for myself I’m not the type of person to give up. I’m extremely persistent anything is possible. I just need to open up that door to possibility and from there really start a new chapter into my adult life.

I want to move out and be truly independent. I need to get this job to achieve that. So my following blogs will be about how I got into a professional career, I’m pledging myself online and these posts will be documentation of how I got there. If anyone has advice for me that would be awesome and welcome.

I no longer want some job that is part time with lousy hours I want something full time and wear office clothes because I look damn good in it.

Hi Yap
Here's my advice: Maintain the focus and persistence that you obviously have, but be open to opportunities that come your way. Sometimes to road to your goal is not straight ahead but meanders through byways.
I am unemployed and have been trying to begin a career for quite some time but nothing has come up for me. Although I am still unemployed, exploring different avenues has allowed me to see what I don't want, so I have been able to narrow my focus down to what I know is right for me.
Putting your goal out there is definitely the way to bring it to fruition. Have you done any motivational /empowerment courses? You sound like you have.
