South Boston was a little different then the southie I knew, but all in all a nice little town.I went to the libarary there to find some local history and was told a story.it seems after the civil war that southern towns put a statue up of a civil war soilder on there town green ther was an ohio company that made these statues for both the north and the south. well since it was South Boston the company made a mistake which wasn't noticed till the unveiling .the belt buckle on the statue said USinstead of CS as it should have and the statue was hauled off to be dumped behind the fairgrounds. The company sent a replacment statue that stands in the town square and the yankee statue now sits inside one of the buildings at the fairground.
My next stop was Raielgh North Carolina a very beutiful place with a grand state house which they have spent alot of time repairing and bringing back to its former glory. even though the doors and trim are made out of wood they have a faux finish on them that was popular at the time the state house was built. Unfortunatly years later they were all painted white. but they have restored the wood to reflect how they were when built . there is an example of a door that was half white and half restored on the second floor . After a tour of the state house i went to the Fayetville Tavern just down the street. Sam the cook fixed me dinner it was trhe best i had since leaving Boston and far better than I got at Chesters in virginia which was made with no care as it was just for passing travelers. The weather was still cold but at least there was no snow.
The next day I headed south and stopped in Specer at hendrix barbacue real good eats and you would have been hard pressed to find a friendlier crew.
