Adventures in Baseball Game Programming
October 28th 2008 21:38
I love baseball, and I'm glued to the World Series. I love nothing more than the story of a team that's been awful, but building up talent and swinging some deals to get to the top. No buying huge free agents (not that I think it's wrong), but just drafting and developing homegrown talent either for the lineup or trading away for other young kids to fill holes.
Anyway, now I'm trying my hand at programming a baseball sim game. Anyone who's played the Earl Weaver games, Tony LaRussa games, Baseball Pro, or OOTP has played a sim baseball game. OOTP is the top one right now (most likely) and mine won't touch that in terms of presentation and probably will never be as popular. For one thing, i don't know about graphics programming so there goes the style points right there!
But hopefully the game will be statistically sound and utilze as much as possible (given my limitations) to adhere to sabermetric research as well as human-like qualities.
Starting off has been a bear since the big part of sabermetrics is the sheer amount of information, and not a lot of it is readily accessible, even with almighty Google. However, with I have found has been wonderfully informative and programmed in, for when I get to the point where I'm ready to simulate games and create players.
Who knows if I'll be able to do this, how good the result will be, and if it's even worth trying to charge even $5 for. But it will be interesting and I figure I have something home-brewed to play when I get a little bored of existing games.
Right now, it's called Knuckleball Baseball. Not the most exciting name in the world, but I figure if that's the extent of the problems, I'll be in good shape!
