Adventure Baby Travel Tips
August 9th 2008 03:15
When my baby was born, I was not ready to stop traveling. Actually, there were more demands than ever to "come visit, and bring the baby!" As I look at my grown up "little girl" I am amazed to think that she has traveled more at her age than I had at twice her age. Weird math, right?
Other travelers groan at Mothers and babes. But at the end of the day, if you pack right and can relax, your baby can be everyone's favorite travel companion. You just need the right gadgets. Luckily, most of raising babies is a sense of adventure and good gadgets, large or small.
1. Start with the large. I carried my baby on my back to travel. It was 2001 and I had an Evenflo backpack carrier. That thing was the bomb; the one thing that most kept me from going suicidal in my motherhood.
The Evenflo backpack carrier was cheap, lightweight, and had a medium sized compartment for storing diapers, wipes, snacks, mom's passport, and a light blanket. The tiny infant was rocking out back there. It was vital for airports (when I needed one free hand for tickets, and one for luggage, baby on the back was key. And in all of our travels, she never cried up there. She loved it, it was like riding on a camel, if I was walking (fast, through the airport, to the bagel stand), she would generally drift off to sleep.
These are the cool packs available today:
The next thing you need is
2. A good bag, with several small wet bags. The big bag can be anything the adult or child wants, but the wet bags should be professional quality. My first recommendation would be to buy them from someone who makes cloth diapers and offers super cute homemade wet bags. But just because I love building Amazon carousels, I'll recommend some gadgets
Wet bags are awesome on any trip, for big people or small ones. That grumpy business man sitting next to you might need a wet bag, if he had one too many cocktails before boarding.
3. The final gadget, guaranteed to make you a stellar parent and traveler. A sarong, or three. I always carried at least one sarong with the baby. It could be a towel, it could be a blanket, it could be an emergency diaper. It wiped our fingers and dried our tears. Pour a little water out of a bottle and it is a wipedown for face and hands (and other areas of the body!) I would also throw down the old sarong on dirty airport carpet if the baby needed to stretch out on the floor for a bit. I still like to carry one everywhere. It can be an instant dress for a party, or it can cover questionable sheets or pillow covers (ew).
Happy shopping and happy travels!
