FOXO Transcription Factors

February 19th 2007 23:23
Biology Lab
Current Biology has a quick guide to FOXO transcription factors. FOXO regulates longevity and tumor suppression. Scientists are able to manipulate the longevity gene in invertebrates, but mammals have proven more difficult to understand.

The Basics of Biofuels

February 19th 2007 22:40
Chris Somerville has written a primer on biofuels and published it in the current issue of Current Biology. The primer discusses how energy is measured and how to compare various sources of fuel. It then goes on to talk about corn and cane ethanol, biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol, some future possibilities for biofuels, and an alternative idea to biofuels.

It's an interesting read and all scientific terms are defined in the article.

Not in Portland Video Recap

February 14th 2007 06:12
Here's a recap for "Not in Portland". The video touches on the salient points of the island story, but leaves out Juliet's rather significant backstory (the focus of the episode).

The most interesting aspect of her character was the transformation from a mouse, who was pushed around by her ex-husband, to a woman willing to kill people--first Ben, then Pickett, maybe others as well that we haven't seen--in order to leave the island. I'm interested in what actually caused that transformation, but I think we won't know for a while, at least

Not in Portland Easter Eggs

February 8th 2007 14:55
"Not in Portland" had some interesting revelations, but I didn't see many Easter eggs.

A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. Over on the Tail Section, DocArzt researched the exact page Aldo was looking at when Kate, Sawyer, and Alex came up to him. It's about black holes and the bending of time. Rather than reproduce his effort, I'll just direct you to the post

Three Days Until Lost Returns

February 5th 2007 02:11
Woohoo! Three days until Lost returns! The first episode of the second half of the season (that's such a mouthful...and it doesn't type any easier) has had enough hype that my expectations are way up. I love Lost and I'm sure it won't disappoint.

Thirteen Total Episodes of Day Break

February 5th 2007 02:08
Day Break with Taye Diggs has thirteen episodes total. Six episodes aired on television before ABC cancelled it. Four more episodes were posted on the ABC web site (follow the link that says "Watch Day Break Online Now") this past Monday. We still have three episodes to go before the series is over, so don't worry if you haven't figured out everything.

on Tricks For Staying Motivated

No tips for staying motivated from me, the slacker queen. I just thought I'd mention that most dressmakers design clothes that are bigger in the hips than in the bust. Most women have a hip measurement that is two to three inches more than their bust measurement. So you're probably not "weird" looking.

Lent starts tomorrow, so I'll be fasting off and on for the next several weeks. That usually takes off a few pounds. If not, then I'll need to get started on a diet in order to be ready for summer.

Oh, my. I'm moving to China. Do you think they include facials and pedicures in those perks?

Love "In the Pink". I haven't been by lately as much as I like, but I think "Wedges" is unique among your art.

I went by the ABC site today to look for it and I didn't see it on there. A blurb says it's coming out this week, so maybe on Wednesday.

Love those eyes. They are just too cute.

I'm not a Pisces, either, but I really like these. Blues, purples, and greens look great.
