PSP no GO

October 5th 2009 04:16
Well, there's a new PSP, yay. Sony has been a company that has lost its way for a long long time. My disdain for them started with their use of rootkits on their music CD's to deter people from ripping the MP3's then subsequently years later turning around and realizing they missed a huge boat that Apple was sailing started selling their own crappy MP3 players. Other reasons to dislike Sony are as follows, perpetual lateness of SCEA titles such as Gran Turismo, too expensive PS3 at launch, destruction of HD-DVD a better format than Blu-Ray, and many others. I've heard they don't treat their recording artists very well either, but I don't have much to go on for that one.

The PSP was very impressive when it first came out. It had a beautiful screen and wireless, with a browser, ooh aah. Unfortunately at first there wasn't very many good games for me to keep mine around and in short the system was... broken. It was big and the UMD's sucked compared to Nintendo's little cartridges. It had decent performance but missed the boat on the keep-you-interested meter. Sony has updated a couple of times adding memory and taking away some heft. But all in all it has remained the same and just not that interesting.

The new PSP-Go is much smaller and has completely lost the UMD drive. That is definitely a start in the right direction. Unfortunately Sony has taken a couple steps back with its lackluster downloads, which is the only way to get games on the device without the UMD drive. Plus there is absolutely no incentive for someone with a pile of UMD games to get the Go because they are unusable as of now. The 16 Gig onboard hard drive for the Go is adequate when most UMD's are less than 1 Gig and top out at 1.8. So at the very least 12 games should fit on the hard drive plus whatever can be crammed on memory sticks. But you can't use your old memory sticks from the regular PSP, noooo. You have to use the micro ones, so once again Sony shuns its loyal fanboys, kind of like they did when they decided to rip the backwards compatibility from the PS3, big mistake. While the Go is definitely more pocket sized it loses 12% of its screen. It is a move from 4.3 to 3.8 inches which doesn't seem like much until you say 12%, yikes. Ok so the PSP-Go isn't all bad but Sony really needs to throw a bone to loyal past customers and figure how to get those UMD's on there, then they need to lower the outrageous price tag of $250 to $150 then it would be a decent deal, not a must have even at that price, but seriously look at what you get for $130 from Nintendo, it's pretty good. Sony is doomed.

WTF Intel

September 28th 2009 01:48
It was one of those quick lived headlines that was soon overshadowed by many others. Emails have been leaked showing what everyone has always suspected. Unfair intimidation practices by Intel to keep AMD out of the "big box" computer business. The emails suggest that many companies are scared to cross the processor giant because it would retaliate in many ways that a key player such as Intel could. The emails suggest unwritten codes of conduct dealing with how much AMD product a company can have in their lineup versus Intel. According to one email Intel wanted the big companies, ie. HP, Dell, etc. to have just 5% AMD share in their lineup of desktop computers. It seems to me this is an unfair, if not illegal, practice to keep a good company from being a competitor in the processor market. A monopoly if you will. Of course these Machiavellian standards seem to be the rule in silicon valley, but if these emails are true this to me is one of the most audacious and blatant underhanded dealings in keeping away competition. My next processor will probably be an AMD because of this, if I can find one. The overshadowing headlines that drowned out this story happened to be some of Intel's other goings-on. One of which is Intel is now entering the standalone video card battle to compete directly with Nvidia and you guessed it, AMD/ATI. So now they'll try to kill that market competition as well. But what I don't understand is why would they bother with non-integrated graphics card when they already have the biggest share of the graphics market in integrated, on board, graphics. They could just develop better onboard graphics one would think, rather than a standalone card. But no instead of forward thinking, which we are used to by Intel because all in all they are innovative, they are thinking inside the current paradigm rather than creating a new one, destroying AMD one piece at a time. We're all doomed.

Netbook Craze

September 13th 2009 15:05
Netbooks are neat. They got started back in the day with the idea for one laptop per child. It was supposed to be for children in developing nations at a very cheap price. Then the American public said "me too". Now it is officially a fad. Everyone has one and they are actually pretty useful. I have an I have the Asus 900a and I like it. It is difficult to type papers for school or anything of length as the keyboards on the smaller ones are just that, small and uncomfortable. The small size makes it easy to hit incorrect keys. . The battery life is really terrible for a machine that one would think would be fairly efficient due to the low powered processor and the small LCD. That said it does last about 2 hours with the wireless on. Not bad, but it leaves something to be desired, especially if you want to use it as an eReader. All in all they should not be expected to be a desktop replacement, but they are very utilitarian for email and internet and they do it better than your phone, which would be technically the next smallest computer.

Oh yeah by the way. Dear Apple you've missed the boat on the netbook craze, so stay out of it. You can't make it inexpensive enough to be what everyone wants. All the other big companies missed out on the mp3 player market so at least you've got that. Start another new craze of your own, because the follower image is what you're projecting going into netbooks and it doesn't suit you. Thanks.

AMD Vision = World is dumb

September 10th 2009 23:52
AMD officially admits you are a dumbass. AMD is officially dumbing down its lineup from actual specifications to organization into category by functionality. Basically low-end mid and high-end. Like we couldn't already make those distinctions ourselves. But apparently the Canadian research team working in the Yukon queried all of the polar bears to find out we in fact do not care about "gigabytes and gigahertz". Wha??!!? Well I do. And I know the bazillions of customers and friends that ask for computing advice know that 2 is better than 1 even in regards to gigahertz, just not in golf.

I understand they want to make it easier and friendlier to pick a computer or a processor because in the end there is a lot of garbage to filter out to pick the right components. I have always love AMD, mainly because I love "bang for my buck". And they provide it, most of the time. Everyone knows the company is faltering and waning and this marketing ploy is not what they should be focusing on. I like their new chips, I like the whole "spider" and "dragon" idea. Especially after trying to get a geForce card to run on via chipset during k8 era, a platform that is built to run together is cool, it takes a lot of headache out. Anyway. Good luck AMD thanks for keeping it real...?

Apple Schmapple

September 10th 2009 01:48
I have always been enthusiastic about Apple products. They are shiny, cool, and downright beautiful. Unfortunately Apple has always been a company that strings along its adamant followers by incrementally adding new and improved to keep you hooked. Case in point Snow Leopard. It is an incremental update that should be free. It's an update not a new operating system. Okay I know I'll get a lot of flak for that one, but think about the update history on OS X, a lot of incremental updates that were all $100 except for Snow Leopard. And everyone complains Vista is expensive, pssh.

Second point, September 9th. A nano with a camera, cue crickets and tumbleweeds and blank stares. So now it's a baby iphone wannabe? It's nothing groundbreaking that's for sure. I would have peed myself if they unveiled a nano sized touchscreen player with 160 gigs of solid state memory in it, now that's what I would have expected from the intense buildup. Nope anticlimactic finish, booo. Thanks for the incremental nothing Apple. I guess if I want to be a fashionable spy I can get it so I can take shots of the hot chick on the bench, er I mean, the Russian turncoat selling our secrets to aaah whatev. So my phone already takes crappy pictures, so why my Nano
